Gengler, Lillian May (Nee Stiebs)Lillian May Gengler, March 27, 1916-March 5, 2006, born in Outagamie County, City of Kaukauna, and graduate of Appleton High School, June 7, 1934. She was a beloved mother and wife.Survived by her four sisters: Mary, Martha, Mata and Mable; her son, Jim Gengler; grandson, James J.A. Gengler; five great-granddaughters, all under 6 years old: Marie, Lillian, Klara Mae and twins Denise and Virginia."Lily" as everyone called her, was no stranger to poverty or hard work. She moved from the farm to the city to attend high school, while cleaning wealthy families' homes for room and board. During those four years of the depression, she owned only two dresses that she wore every other day while attending classes. Lily married a cowboy. She tested for her drivers license one day, and drove all the way to California the very next day to work in the Camp Roberts laundry while her husband Joe went through Army basic training. While Joe fought the enemy in Guadalcanal and New Georgia, she gave birth to a son, and worked for the remaining part of World War II. During the 50's, Lily managed Shady Acres Stables that housed Polo ponies of Uihlein, the Milwaukee Polo Club, as well as polo teams from out of state and foreign countries. For relaxation she traveled the world after both her husband and son died, only 6 months apart from each other. Lily also enjoyed gardening, sewing, playing summer dart ball, caring for animals, and riding her bicycle at 4 a.m. in the morning.Special thanks to the caring friends and staff of Dove Healthcare, Cedar Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center, the assisted living homes at The Lutheran Home-The Gardens on North Avenue, Windsor House and Cobble Terrace Bay View.Private services were held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Granville Senior Center, 7717 W. Good Hope Rd., Milwaukee, WI 53223 a re appreciated. Condolences to: www.krausefuneralhome.com
