Tom served five years in the United States Marine Corps and was a decorated veteran of the Korean Conflict. Tom spent much of his free time with his family, as well as in the outdoors: hunting, fishing, and trapping. He looked forward to his annual trip to Montana to enjoy many of those activities. In his later years, Tom enjoyed volunteering his time to the Wisconsin Trappers Association and was especially proud of his service to this country.
