Francis J. Gilbert, second class petty officer, is back in the states after a year in the South Pacific during which time he participated in 10 major battles while aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S Yorktown. He was returning to the United States on the S.S. Henry Bergh when it ran aground in a fog on rocky reefs and sank. He drifted on a raft with two other men for two hours before being rescued by a subchaser. He lost all of personal effects when the ship went down. Francis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gilbert town of Kaukauna.

Gilbert, Mr. Marlyn "Marlie" Green Bay Age 76, passed away Thursday Dec. 18, 2003 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Marlie, son of William and Petronella Gilbert was born in l927 in Kaukauna, WI. He attended a rural one room schoolhouse where he liked to say he was the smartest kid in his class being the only one for 8 years! He graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1945. He was inducted into the Army and served in Korea from 1946-1947. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and graduated in 1953. He taught History and coached football and track in Marion, WI from 1953-1959. He received his Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin in l960. He came to Green Bay as a Guidance Counselor in l959 and worked at Franklin Jr. High, East and Southwest High Schools until his retirement in 1988.
On June 20, 1953, he married his college sweetheart, Joan Jersey at St. Rose Catholic Church in Clintonville, WI. They had been married for 50 years and had four children.
Marlie enjoyed woodworking and building. His favorite place on earth was the cottage he built in Three Lakes. Golfing, camping and dancing the polka were favorite pastimes. He love to travel and he especially loved "bus trips".
Marlie loved his kids and was so proud of their accomplishments. The little lessons he taught will always be remembered by them. He was always there for his family. We will cherish the long-ago summers at the cottage and his "20 year plan" will always be a source of happiness for us.
Marlyn is survived by his loving wife, Joan; 2 sons, David (Suzanne) Gilbert, Minneapolis, MN; Daniel (Cindy) Gilbert, San Diego, CA; 2 daughters, Barbara (Ed) Koslowski, Green Bay and Patricia (Ken) Karnopp, Green Bay; 4 grandchildren, Sarah Gilbert, Katie and Jenna Koslowski and Matt Gilbert. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Marion (Norm) Conard, Joan Lauer and one brother, Joe (Maxine) Gilbert.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., Green Bay from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. There will be a Parish Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Friends may also call at St. Jude Catholic Church, Green Bay from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at l0:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Msgr. Mark Schommer officiating. Entombment will be in the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.
The Gilbert family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Highland Health Care for their care of Marlie over the last 5 and a half years. Special thanks to a wonderful friend, Paul, who was there every step of the way for Marlie and Jo.
