James Andrews was born James Batari, son of Imre Batari and Eleonore Szasz. Sometime in 1910 or shortly thereafter, Eleonore and Imre Batari separated, and Eleonore married Stephen Andrews. James and his siblings eventually took on the surname Andrews. In fact, James and his younger sister, Julia, knew nothing of their real father until they were adults ready to marry.
James and Julia were born in New Jersey and New York, respectively, but his 4 older siblings were all born in Hungary. Gisella (Grace) b 1900, Veronika b 1902, unnamed child born and died 1 Dec 1903, and Iren b 1905 also died as an infant.
