    JAMES HAMILTON
    James Hamilton, 86, Kaukauna, Civil War Veteran, died at his home on Desnoyer-st, at 4.30 Monday morning, after a lingering illness. Born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the family moved to Wisconsin when Mr. Hamilton was one year old. Mr. Hamilton has lived in Kaukauna for 73 years. He served in the Civil War as a member of Company G, third Wisconsin cavalry, and is a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Matt Gerhard, Mable and Eva Hamilton of Kaukauna; two sons, James and Ben Hamilton of Manitowoc; and one brother, John Hamilton, of Whittier. Funeral services will be at the Brokaw Memorial Methodist church, Kaukauna, at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. The Rev, H. Lane will be in charge, and burial will be in the Kelso cemetery.

    COMPLETE PLANS FOR OBSERVANCE OF MEMORIAL DAY
    Procession to Cemeteries Will Start at 9 O'clock in Morning
    Kaukauna - Memorial Day will be observed here Friday morning with ceremonies at the cemeteries, Legion hall and at Memorial park. Plans for the program have been completed by Ed Haas, chairman of the committee In charge. At 9 o'clock in the morning & procession of cars will start for the cemeteries. Cemeteries that will be visited are Union, St. Mary's, Holy Cross, Kelso and Lutheran. They will be visited in the order named. The procession will then return to the Legion hall, where a short service will be held at the Oak-st. park. A service will be held at the Wisconsin- ave. bridge for the dead sailors. Volleys of shots will be fired by the Legion firing- squad at each of the cemeteries, at the Legion hall and over the Fox river in honor of the war dead. Flowers will be thrown on the water by the Women's Relief corps and the ladies of the Legion auxiliary for the dead sailors. The march will then continue to the Memorial park where a ceremony will take place at the foot of the Civil war veteran's monument under the direction of the Women's Relief corps. John Laws and James Hamilton, two surviving Civil war veterans, will be honored there and will represent the Grand Army of the Republic post.

    Mrs. Robert M. Simpson (Gertrude Gerharz) Formerly of 1839 S. Bouten St. Age 76, passed away at3:30 p.m. Sunday following a one year illness. She was born March 8, 1879 in Kaukauna and lived in Chicago for forty years until moving to Appleton twelve years ago. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and the Aooleton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Edith Fellows, Appleton; two brothers, A.J. "Huck" Gerharz, Bellaire Bluffs, Florida; Kenneth Gerharz, Muscatine, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband September 10, 1970. Complete funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Wichmann Funeral Home with Rev. Herman F. Thomas officiating. Interment will be in the Kelso Cemetery, Kaukauna. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of the service. A memorial has been established for the First United Methodist Church.

    Obituary:
    Jean F. Kafura, age 84 of Big Lake, Gresham, formerly of Appleton, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013. Born on July 25, 1929 in Appleton, she is the daughter of the late Harry and Edith (Gerharz) Fellows. On November 28, 1947, Jean was united in marriage to Frederick Kafura who preceded her in death on January 12, 2008. Jean loved the holidays, especially decorating, cooking, baking and liked to refer to herself as a household engineer. She enjoyed antiques and nature, in particular, wildflowers and bird-watching, she also enjoyed traveling, especially trips with Fred to Europe and later winters in New Smyrna Beach, FL, visiting friends and family. Jean was an exceptionally giving individual, volunteering with Outagamie County Cancer Society and also at the Appleton Medical Center Gift Shop where she especially enjoyed arranging the window displays. She was a former officer and lifetime member of the AMC Hospital Auxiliary and was very involved with the Red Barn in Shawano. Jean was a member of both the Appleton Y's Menettes, and the Gresham Women's Club. She was very involved in the Salem United Methodist Church, especially the building committee and the church's annual bazarre. Jean traveled far and wide in search of the area's best pie and ice cream, and enjoyed sharing her findings with those who asked.
    Jean is survived by: her sons, John (Jane), Kim (Connie), David (Kathy); daughters, Jody and Kerry; grandchildren, Brian, Mark, Heidi, Jason, Errick, Peter; brother-in-law, John (Molly); niece, Heidi Garvin; nephews, Craig and Christopher (Vicki) Kafura, Dick and Bob Fellows; and her beloved cat, Maggie.
    She is preceded in death by: her husband, Frederick; her parents and her brother, Keith Fellows.
    Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Salem United Methodist Church in Red River with the Rev. Loretta Waegli officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

    The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nurses and the staff at the Shawano Medical Center, ThedaCare Hospice, Dr. Mortara and his staff and Dr. Qualheim. The family would also like to thank family members who made it possible for her to be at home in her final days, including Kerry, Peter, Jody, and Kim. Memorials may be directed to the Salem United Methodist Church in Red River.
