Madison/Winona, MN - Mary Kathryn (Kate) Zanzig, age 74, passed away in Madison, WI on August 2, 2016 in the presence of her family after a short battle with cancer.
Kate was born in Appleton on December 22, 1941 to Stanford and Helen Hass. She graduated from Appleton West High School, and later from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Wausau, WI. Kate eventually became head nurse for orthopedics at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Appleton. Kate later chose to leave nursing in order to focus on her family.
Kate married Tom Zanzig on September 2, 1968 (divorced in 1997) and had two children, Adam and Barb.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents, Stanford and Helen Hass, Appleton WI, and her brother and sister-in-law, Jon & Diane Hass, Menasha WI.
Kate will be deeply missed by her son Adam (Stacy, granddaughter Amelia), and her daughter Barb. She is further survived by her brothers and sister: Michael (Maria) Hass, Miami, FL; David (Lory) Hass, Appleton, WI; Barbara (Mark) Pirner, Appleton, WI; Joe Hass, Portland, OR.
Kate was a born caretaker, cherishing her roles as homemaker, mother and friend. She was happiest when she was able to provide comfort to others with a home-cooked meal, some words of wisdom, or a touch of humor. She volunteered for many years with the American Cancer Society , as well at St. Mary's Grade School and Cotter Junior High School in Winona, MN.
Kate enjoyed college basketball, political discussions, crossword puzzles and bargain hunting. Many of Kate's fondest memories were of summers spent at Shawano Lake, surrounded by her loving family. In her final years, Kate's greatest joy came from time spent with her beloved granddaughter, Amelia.
Kate's family want to thank the staff at both Winona Health and UW Hospital who provided her with excellent medical care and treated Kate and her family with great compassion and kindness.
At Kate's request, there will be no funeral services, but friends and family are encouraged to post remembrances along with Kate's obituary at http://www.cressfuneralservice.com.
