    Biography:
THOMAS DAY, deceased. Thomas Day, one of the pioneer citizens of Outagamie county, whose death occurred April 6, 1889, was a native of Ireland, and came to the United States when he was twenty-one years of age. He was married in Philadelphia in 1850, and in that year came to Outagamie county, settling in Ellington township, where he purchased wild land and started to make himself a home. Clearing the land from the timber, he soon put it in a state of cultivation, and at the time of his death he was the owner of 120 acres of excellent land. Mr. Day was married to Bridget Durrick, daughter of Matthew and Catherine (Craynor) Durrick, early settlers of Philadelphia, and they had a family of twelve children, as follows: Matthew, a railroad engineer of Antigo, Wisconsin; William, a farmer of Outagamie county; Elizabeth, who was a professional nurse; Edward, a conductor of Brainerd, Minnesota; Mary, who married N. Kelley, a resident of South Dakota; Anna, a professional nurse; Celia, who married Alfred Decker, of Chilton, Wisconsin; Thomas, a fireman of Appleton; Emma, who married B. F. Newcomb, a resident of Appleton; Morris and Julia, living with their mother; and John, a resident of Duluth, Minnesota. The family is connected with St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the boys are members of the Catholic Knights, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Day was one of those who assisted materially in the growth and development of Outagamnie county, and he was always known as a progressive and practical citizen and first class agriculturist.

    Obituary:
Donald P. Day, age 85, formerly of Appleton, died peacefully at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay on February 28, 2016 with his family by his side. After a five year struggle with congestive heart failure, bladder cancer, and overcoming a recent stroke, Don was welcomed into Heaven into the loving arms of his wife, Rose. Don's last days were spent with his family telling him how much they loved him, recalling good times and memories along the way.
Don was born on May 17, 1930 in Appleton, Wisconsin, the son of the late Clarence and Marie (State) Day. On June 2, 1951, Don was united in marriage to his beautiful bride, Rose Ann Knabenbauer at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton. Rose preceded Don in death on August 12, 2010. In his early years, Don faithfully served his country in the 127th Infantry 32nd Division of the Wisconsin National Guard, and he was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. Upon his discharge in 1969, he obtained the rank of Master Sergeant E8. In addition to his time with the National Guard, he maintained many jobs in the areas of regional sales, before completing a 25+ year career at Miller Electric as a respected department foreman.
Don's interests included camping in the north woods, frequenting many of the local state parks with his family. Upon retirement, Don and Rose purchased vacation property in Mountain, Wisconsin, where they enjoyed many years of relaxation, staying busy with numerous projects and improvements, as well as enjoying quality time together fishing and boating. Don was an avid traveler with his wife, enjoying many trips to Florida, Cancun, Mexico, fishing trips to Canada with his family, as well as an Alaskan cruise in 1996. To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2001, Don and Rose took a well-deserved dream vacation to Europe, visiting countries such as England, France, Norway, and Spain. The trips he took with his family and loved ones were the highlights of his life.
Don was a gentle and kind soul, who cherished the time spent with wife Rose, his only son, Scott and watching his young grandchildren grow, enjoying the love they brought to his life, the pride of following their many sports, and taking pride in the young people they were becoming.
In his final years, Don enjoyed the many friendships that he gained while living at Moraine Ridge Senior Living Community in Green Bay, enjoying the company of good friends, weekly outings, nightly card games, and activities along the way.
Don is survived by his only son, Scott (Wendy) Day of Luxemburg, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Rebekah, McKenna, and Ryland Day. Scott was very dedicated to his father for the many years he needed care, not leaving his side during his final days, and comforting him and making sure he felt loved and cared for right up until the end. He is further survived by a brother--in--law, Jack (Karen) Knabenbauer, a sister--in--law, Sharon Maass, and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Rose Ann Day, his brother, Ken (Mary) Day, his brother, Gene (Germaine) Day, many of his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from his wife's side of the family, as well as two nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:00 pm on Friday, March 4, 2016 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette Street, Appleton with Father Thomas J. Farrell officiating. Military honors will follow the mass. Friends may call at the church from 4:00 pm until 5:45 pm prior to the time of the service. Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton at a later date.
Don's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Moraine Ridge Senior Living Community of Green Bay for their care the past five years, the staff at Aurora BayCare Medical Center of Green Bay ICU, as well as the compassionate 1st floor care he received from nurses Amy and June during his final days. Also, special thanks to the touching harp player who visited Don during the last hour of his life, providing him with peaceful music as he made his final journey to Heaven. We love you Dad (and Grandpa)...until we meet again.
