    Obituary:
After more than a decade of practicing family medicine in Point Loma, Dr. Kenneth W. Meinert decided to specialize in one of his favorite duties, delivering babies.
In 1967, he began a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Kaiser Sunset Hospital in Hollywood. But freeway gridlock there and his love of San Diego brought him back after three years, and Dr. Meinert practiced his new specialty for the next nine years at Kaiser Foundation Hospital.
He died of brain cancer Thursday at his Del Cerro home. He was 73.
A back ailment, resulting in partial paralysis of his right leg, forced Dr. Meinert to retire from medicine in 1986. In ensuing years, he was able to visit much of the world that he hadn't seen as a Navy flight surgeon in the Korean War.
He and his wife, Aura, visited many foreign countries, and the couple traveled throughout the United States in a motor home.
Dr. Meinert was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, where his father worked at a paper mill.
As a youth, he accompanied a family doctor on house calls and was determined to become a physician.
Dr. Meinert joined the Navy's V-12 medical program and graduated at age 22 from the school of medicine at Marquette University. He served an internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee, then was assigned in 1953 to San Diego's Naval Training Center.
Fond of the area, the Meinerts bought a home in San Diego. Eleven days later, Dr. Meinert was transferred, first to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, later to Pensacola Air Station in Florida.
During the Korean War, Dr. Meinert served aboard the aircraft carrier Sicily in Guam and off the coast of Japan. He also was assigned for a time to an anti-submarine squadron based in Coronado.
In 1955, Dr. Meinert opened a family practice in Point Loma. He was among the founding physicians of Doctors Hospital, which opened in the Midway District in 1959 and later became Sharp Cabrillo Hospital.
While practicing medicine in San Diego, Dr. Meinert taught medical residents as an assistant clinical professor at UCSD Medical Center. In 1983, the residents honored him with the Joseph M. Didio Memorial Award for teaching excellence.
Dr. Meinert was invited in 1980 to be among the first U.S. physicians who toured medical facilities in mainland China.
Diagnosed last year with a brain tumor, he underwent surgery in July 1998 and received radiation treatment. Before his condition worsened, he was able to attend the baptism of his then two month old granddaughter, Lindsay Campbell.
"It was the only time he left the house since his surgery, and it meant a lot to the family and friends," said daughter Crissa Campbell.
Survivors include Dr. Meinert's wife of 51 years, Aura; daughters, Gloria Gottlieb and Crissa Campbell, both of San Diego; sisters, Collette Vargo of Kaukauna and Rosemary St. Aubin of Little Chute, Wisconsin; a brother, Jerome, of Mesquite, Nevada; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at St. Therese's Catholic Church, 6016 Camino Rico, San Diego.
Private interment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
Donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
