    Obituary:
Norbert "Norb" Giesen, age 89, of Appleton, was called from his home to eternal life on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, due to natural causes. He was born on August 7, 1923 in Menasha to the late Salome and Clarence Giesen. He attended St. Mary's grade and high school, and was a 1941 graduate. Norb lettered in football and basketball. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After boot camp, he was assigned to the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. Minneapolis CA36, and for the next 3 years participated in many major campaigns in the South Pacific. During WWII, he was most proud of the Minnie's numerous battle stars. The American Defense Service Medal Asiatic-Pacific with 15 battle stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 battle stars. It was one of the most decorated ships in the Navy; 17 battle stars in all. After the successful invasion of Okinawa on Easter Sunday in 1945, the ship was ordered home for a re-fit. While on leave, he married Dorothy Engel on May 19, 1945; and they shared 67 years together. They spent their honeymoon in Seattle, Washington until the ship was completed and re-deployed. Norb went back to sea duty and Dorothy returned to Appleton. By the time the Minnie got to Cubic Bay, the war was over. After discharge, Norb and Leo C. Sturm owned and operated Leo & Norb's Deep Rock Gas Station on the corner of College Avenue and Walnut Street in downtown Appleton for almost 30 years. He then finished his working career at Azco Inc. as a tool warehouse manager. After retiring in 1986, he spent his free time at their cottage in Mountain, Wisconsin that they built together as a family. For 18 years, they spent the winters in Trophy Gardens in Alamo, Texas. Norb always enjoyed fixing things, especially motors, and you could see the smile on his face when it was working like new again. Norb truly enjoyed spending time with his family.
Norb is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy and five of their six children: Janet (Jeff) Tellock, Robert (Catherine) Giesen, Patricia Eckrich, William (Mona) Giesen, and Thomas (Sonja) Giesen; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Mary Ann Gagnon.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 24, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 528 Second Street, Menasha, with Fr. Paul Paider officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the hour of the Mass at the church. Interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery, Town of Menasha.
