    No Inquest Planned In Auto Death
    No inquest is planned into the death of Mrs. David Blair, 63, Kau- Uauna, who died here yesterday of injuries received early Sunday afternoon when a car driven, by Leonard DeCaster, Kaukauna, backed over her while she was walking with, her husband on the highway near the north city limits at Kaukauna, The accident was investigated by Police Chief R. H. McCarty at Kau- T<:auna. Following a conference with that official _ by District Attorney Stanley A. Staidl the latter'said that DeCaster was not to blams for the accident and no inquest "would be held. " DeCaster was backing out of a driveway, according to the police leports, grazing Mr. Blair and knocking "Mrs. Blair down. She suffered a broken hip and ley and her chest was crushed and she was taken to St. Elizabeth hospital. She was born in DePere and lived in Kaukauna for the last 19 years. Survivors are her widower; five daughters, Mrs. M. Keller and Mrs. "Wilbur Pomeroy ol Kaukauna, Mrs. lmer Sauer and, Mrs. E. Hartzheim of Neenah, and Mi's. R. Marquardt of Marinette; four fions, Joseph of Cloqtuet, Minn., Theodore and Adolph. of Neenah, and Edward of Freedom. Funeral services will be held' at 9 o'clock Friday morning at Holy Ctoss Catholic church, Kaukauna. The Rev. P. J. Lochman will be in charge' of the services and burial will be in Mount Calvary cemetery at DePere.

    Mary E. (Ahrens) Stegert, 96, Appleton, went to be with Jesus Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Renaissance. She was born October 26, 1913, in the Fox Valley to the late Patrick and Hattie (De Bruin) Gerarden. She married Harold "Red" Ahrens and they had three children together; he preceded her in death in 1974. Mary later married Donald Stegert and he preceded her in death in 2003. She worked for the City of Appleton as a parking cashier for many years. She loved old movies, bingo, horses, bird watching, flowers and time spent at the cottage at Lake Metonga in Crandon.
    Survivors include her children: John "Jack" Ahrens, Appleton; Patricia (David) Parry, Wellington, NV, and Tom (Rose) Ahrens, Appleton; 12 grandchildren: Marcus Ahrens, Tim Ahrens, Dawn Ahrens-Trams, John Ahrens, Tom Parry, David Parry Jr., Lori Johnson, Tricia Courtright, Michael Ahrens, Lisa Stroess, Brian Ahrens and Thomas "TJ" Ahrens; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Louis (Sally) Gerarden, Appleton and two sisters-in-law: Louise Gerarden and Merle Gerarden.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a great-grandchild, Nicholas Behling; a grandson-in-law, Duane Trams; siblings: Ted and Tony Gerarden, Florence Heinritz and Vin and Jack Jensen.
    A prayer service for Mary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Valley Funeral Home. Friends may visit the family from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.

    Gerarden (Ted) Appleton
    Ted passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2001. He was born in De Pere, s on of the late Patrick and Henrietta (DeBruin) Gerarden, and later liv ed in Appleton, where his father was lockmaster at Appleton No. 4 Locks a nd Dam. He attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Appleton High Sch ool in 1937. He received his B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Milw aukee State Teachers College (UW-Milwaukee). Immediately afterward, he enl isted as a Chief Boatswain's Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard. While station ed at Atlantic City, N.J., he married Louise M. McCarter (also of Appleto n) on November 21, 1942, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He s erved in the Pacific Theater during WWII until his honorable discharge Jan uary 31, 1946. After his return, he was employed by the First National Ban k/Marine Bank for 37 years. He also taught the Saturday Morning Arts & Cra fts Class for 27 years with the Appleton Recreation Department. He was a m ember of Sacred Heart Church, where he served for many years as a truste e.     Leo Joseph Blair, Kaukauna, age 84, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born August 7, 1925, in Freedom, son of the late Edward and Mary (Mangold) Blair. On May 15, 1948, he was united in marriage to Florence Wuyts in Kaukauna. Together they enjoyed 58 years of marriage until her death in 2006. Leo was an U.S. Army Veteran serving two tours of duty during WWII, and a member of the Wrightstown American Legion Post #436. He was employed at Thilmany Pulp and Paper for 44 years as a pipe fitter and fire chief until his retirement. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Family, friends, and neighbors were very important in Leo's life, especially the grand and great-grandchildren.

    Norbert "Nubby" P. Blair, age 85, son of the late Edward and Mary (Mangold) Blair, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2015. He was born January 17, 1930 in Freedom. Norbert was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was employed by Thilmany Pulp and Paper for 37 years until his retirement in 1991. He served in the U.S. Army in 1951 until 1953 and in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1959. He married Phyllis (Diedrich) on November 7, 1955 in Kaukauna. Phyllis passed away twenty-five years ago on July 4, 1990.
    Nubby enjoyed craft hobbies, such as woodworking and plastic canvas creations. He was a member of VFW Post 3319.
    He is survived by a sister Bernice Verhoeven, Kaukauna; two sisters-in law: Germaine and Arlene Blair, of Kaukauna; sons: Randy (Susan) Blair of Appleton and Dennis Blair of Combined Locks; grandson Greg (Ashley) Blair of Appleton; two great grandchildren: Bentley and Mackenzie; special friend Bette Spencer; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis; three sisters: Loretta VandenBerg, Ruth Diedrich and Joan Blair; four brothers: Edward, Jerome, Cletus, and Leo Blair; two sisters-in-law: Virginia and Florence Blair; three brothers-in-law: Alvin VandenBerg, Vic Diedrich, and Earl Verhoeven.
    A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Father Tom Pomeroy officiating.     RACINE - Sr. Mary (Mathias) Keller O.P. 85, passed away at Lakeshore Manor, Racine, on Monday, February 11, 2002. She was born February 25, 1916, to Mathew and Mary (nee: Blair) Keller in Kaukauna. On August 29, 1931, Mary Sophie Keller joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1932, she was given the religious name, Sr. Mathias. She professed her first vows in 1934 and her final vows in 1940. In 1968, she changed back to her baptismal name, Mary. Sr. Mary spent many years in ministry to others as a Teacher. She started her teaching career in 1934-1935 at St. Rita, Racine. She also taught at St. Edward, where she was the Principal; Holy Name, Kimberly; St. Mary, Kenosha, where she was the Principal; St. Catherine High School, Racine; she helped start St. John Reading Center, Racine. From 1965 until 1966, Sr. Mary was the Director of Aspirants at St. Catherine Convent, Racine. She was Medical Records Clerk for St. Catherine's Infirmary, Racine 1987 until 1990. She retired to Siena Center in 1990, where she continued in community service. On February 7, 2002, Sr. Mary became a resident at Lakeshore Manor. Sr. Mary is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brothers, Gerald, Mathew and Marie Keller, Robert and Josephine Keller; her sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Robert Donnermeyer; her brother-in-law, Clarence Carlson; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, John; and her sisters, Anne Werner and Alvira Carlson. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Siena Center Chapel Thursday, February 14, 2002, at 6:30 p.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Highway 32. Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Thursday from 1 p.m. until time for the Liturgy with a Remembering service at 4:30 p.m. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.     Alvina "Boots" Piette, age 82, of Appleton, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at Cherry Meadows. She was born on September 16, 1928, in Neenah; daughter of the late Edward and Alvina (Blair) Hartzheim. On May 29, 1948, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah, she was married to Roland Piette.
    Devoted wife and mother, she will be deeply missed by her husband, Roland; her children: Jim (Jean) Piette, Appleton; Lynn (Don) Freimuth, Appleton; and Becky (Jim) Heegeman, Waupaca; grandchildren, Dave (Patie) Freimuth, Carrie (Steve) Kissel, Dan Managan, Greg Piette and Kristy (Kyle) Maass; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Ethan, Emily, Thompson and Melina; three sisters, two brothers and by many other relatives and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Tom Freimuth; two sisters and two brothers.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 5, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Family and friends may visit at Valley Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 - 7 p.m. and again at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the mass. A prayer service will be held on Thursday at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Entombment will take place in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. A memorial fund is being established in her name.

    Tom Ahrens, age 77 of Appleton, passed away Friday, October 28, 2016. He had battled Lewy Body Dementia for over five years. Tom was born in Appleton on July 20, 1939, son of the late Harold and Mary (Gerarden) Ahrens. He attended Appleton High School, and on July 8, 1961 married Rose DeDecker who survives him. Together, the couple celebrated fifty-five years of marriage this past July. He was employed by Spencer Johnston and J.J. Plank for thirty-eight years, and after a very brief "retirement" spent another ten years working for Bergstrom Lexus of Appleton.
    Tom was a wonderful husband and father, always caring for his family. He enjoyed bowling and playing softball with the guys from work. He also loved to play cards, or just spend quiet time at the cottage with dear friends Stan and Sandy Woldt.
    He is survived by his wife: Rose Ahrens of Appleton; three children: Michael (Malissa) Ahrens of Menasha; Brian (Melissa) Ahrens of Appleton; and T.J. (Faren) Ahrens of Bristow, Virginia; six grandchildren: Amber Behling, Katie Ahrens, Lexi Ahrens, Baylee Ahrens, Matthew Ahrens, and Elijah Ahrens; a brother: Jack Ahrens of Appleton; a sister: Pat (David) Parry of Winona, Texas; two sisters-in-law: Kathy (Bill) Gardner of Appleton and Terri Schmidt of Seymour; a brother-in-law: Dr. Randy (Nancy) DeDecker of Hortonville; a son-in-law: Kent Stroess; and a step-grandson: Jesse Stroess. There are also several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Lisa Stroess, a grandson Nicholas Behling, Rose's parents Harold and Gertrude DeDecker, and his step-father Don Stegert.
    A memorial funeral liturgy for Tom will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, Morrison Street at Wisconsin Avenue, with Fr. Ryan Starks officiating.     Mary A. Vanden Berg, 63, of Appleton, formerly of Iola, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 22, 2013.
    Gary was born February 14, 1950, in Appleton, the son of the late Alvin and Loretta (Blair) Vanden Berg.
    Gary was united in marriage to Bonnie E. Krenzke on June 3, 1972, in Poy Sippi, and they were blessed with two children, Jason and Amy.
    Gary began his love of the grocery business very early when he started bagging groceries as a high schooler at the Piggly Wiggly in Appleton. In 1978, he took the next step and purchased Happy Harvest Foods in Scandinavia. In 1981, he opened First Stop Food Depot in Waupaca. Focusing on the grocery business in Waupaca, he established Gary's Piggly Wiggly in 1989. He took pride in his business and loved to give back to the community. This is where he ran the business he loved for 24 years until he sold it to his "other son" and long-time manager, Scott Neumann, this past May.
    Although his passing was so close to his "retirement", he was doing what he loved his entire life. He enjoyed being a member of GWGC for many years and loved to golf whenever and wherever he could. He served on boards for various organizations including Glacier Wood Golf Course, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Harbor Vista Condo Association, and Piggly Wiggly Midwest Retail Advisory Board.
    He also had been known to play some cribbage and sheepshead from time to time and looked forward to the Thursday night pool league. He always said, "I'm working every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning unless there is something I want to do on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning."
    Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; son, Jason (Amy) Vanden Berg, Appleton; daughter, Amy (Aaron) Tuomi, Seymour; Grandpa will be missed by his grandchildren: Taylor, Nicholas and Kate Vanden Berg and Bryce, Brenden and Lydia Tuomi. Gary is further survived by sister-in-law, Barb Vanden Berg, Appleton; brother-in-law, Gene (Evelyn) Krenzke, Paxinos, PA; nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Loretta, and his brother, Mark.
    The funeral for Gary will be held Friday, October 25, 2013, 11:00 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1120 Evans St., Waupaca. with Reverend Loren Fritz & Reverend Paul Bowe officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola.     Mark A. Vanden Berg, 60, died peacefully at home in the arms of his loving wife after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
    He was born on November 13, 1952 in Appleton; son of the late Alvin and Loretta (Blair) Vanden Berg. On June 22, 1974, he was united in marriage to Barbara J. Vick at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton.
    Mark worked for Appleton Coated for 40 years and also was a 30 year member of the Moose Lodge. He loved trains, woodworking, fishing (especially with his grandchildren) and listening to Bob Uecker while sitting on the dock in Pickerel.
    He is survived by his wife, Barbara Vanden Berg, Appleton; children, Michelle Kloehn (Mike Ricker), Weyauwega, Paul and Heather Vanden Berg, DeKalb, IL, and Kathy Schake, Appleton; grandkids, Andrea, Alisha and Alexis Kloehn and their father, Lloyd, Trevor and Parker Vanden Berg, and Zachary and Evan Schake and their father, Choi. He is also survived by his brother, Gary and Bonnie Vanden Berg and brothers and sisters in law, Robert and Sara Helein, Cindy and Dan Steiner and John Vick as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and mother and father in law, Eugene and Marian (Helein) Vick.
    A funeral service for Mark will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Valley Funeral Home, Appleton with the Rev. William Hoffman officiating. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton.     Eugene Paul "Gene" Blair, beloved father and husband, passed away May 17, 2010, with his family by his side. Gene, born August 3, 1946, was the second of five children born to Edward and Virginia Blair of Kaukauna, Wisconsin. He was an engineer at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, until his death.

    Clifford "Cliff" J. Van Hammond, age 65, of Weyauwega, passed away after a long lingering illness on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Appleton Medical Center with his loving family by his side. He was born on January 25, 1947, in Appleton, son of the late Joseph and Gladys (Pomeroy) Van Hammond. Cliff was raised in Little Chute. On April 23, 1983 he married Kathleen Vincent in Fremont. Cliff served his country in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. Cliff had a great sense of humor, he loved his family and friends especially his computer and TV, watching football with his son Matthew. He was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Weyauwega.
    He is survived by his wife Kathy; two children: Jessica and Matthew all of Weyauwega; a brother Tom (Connie) Van Hammond; three sisters: Janice (Chester) Guyette, Karen (Dennis) Krosner, Cheryl (Mike) Scanlon, also many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Charlene and daughter Sarah.
    The Memorial Mass for Cliff will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Weyauwega with Fr. Amalraj Roche officiating. Burial will be in Wisconsin Veteran's Cemetery in King. A Visitation for Cliff will be held directly at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
    The family would like to thank the Weyauwega-Fremont Ambulance, Weyauwega Police and Fire Department, Riverside Hospital, Appleton Medical Center ICU Unit, Brite Star, Jerry Buckholt and Steve and Greta Baehnman for being the best neighbors.

    Obituary:
    Newt Pomeroy, age 62, of Kaukauna, passed away unexpectedly, due to complications from cancer on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Appleton Medical Center. He was born on December 31, 1949 in Appleton, the son of James E. and Jean (Verhoeven) Pomeroy. On March 19, 1991, Newt married Gerri in Las Vegas. He retired as a pipe fitter at Thilmany after 30 years of employment. Newt was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and past governor of the Kaukauna Moose Lodge. After his retirement, he enjoyed working at Countryside Golf Course. Golfing, traveling, especially his trips to Las Vegas, were enjoyed by Gerri and Newt. He was an avid Packer fan and loved being around people at the restaurants that they frequented.
    Newt is survived by his wife, Gerri (Green) Pomeroy; mother: Jean (special friend Elmer Vissers) Pomeroy-Schmidt, Kaukauna; step-children: Julie (fiance, Bob Wolf) Noe, Kellnersville; Lisa (Brett) Brandenburg, Kaukauna and Tara Vanderloop, Kaukauna; grandchildren: Nicholas Rogers; Ashley (special friend Shane Willard) Noe; Tyler Brandenburg; great-grandchildren: Kyle Rogers (my little buddy) and Dalton Willard; siblings: Michael Pomeroy, Kaukauna; Gary Pomeroy, Kaukauna and Sandra (special friend Greg Huff) Mahn, Kaukauna; brothers-in-law: Leonard (Elaine), Lyle (Kathy) and Vernon (friend Patty) Green. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Newt was preceded in death by his father, James Pomeroy; step-father, Truman Schmidt; daughter, Kerry Noe; grandson, Adam Pfiefer; brothers-in-law, Steven Mahn and Harland Green; father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Rosella Green.
    The funeral liturgy for Newt will be held at 4:00 pm on Friday, March 23, 2012 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna. Fr. Tom Pomeroy will be officiating. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 1:00 pm until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name. Online condolences may be expressed at www.wichmannfargo.com.
    Special thanks to Dr. Bruce Danz and Dr. Avi Bar-Lev and the oncology nurses at the Martha Siekman Cancer Center for their compassion and care. Also, Newt's friends for their visits and concern during this difficult time.
