    Hi Jay, Just wanted to get back with you and let you know I got copies of the 2 obits for Catherine Chopin that you told me about. If you want copies, I can fax them to you - just let me know your fax #.
    Unfortunately, the obits didn't give me any information that would confirm the elder Catherine's maiden name was Sheehy and that she was my great-grandmother's sister. The elder Catherine (the mother) was born about 1845 and died in Appleton, WI at the home of her son William on Nov 30, 1925. There was no information, however, about her birthplace, her parents' names or anything. The only other information was that her husband had preceded her in death by 9 years.
    The younger Catherine (the daughter) was born Feb 6, 1874 in Duck Creek and died in Kaukauna Jun 24, 1911 of peretonitis after her appendix ruptured.
    Will let you know if/when I ever get solid information that Catherine is in fact my great-grandmother's sister. The Canadian marriage record has her marrying a Jonathan Chopin whose age and birthplace are right for the John Chopin she appears with in several censuses. There is also evidence that several Sheehys immigrated to the US from Canada, but that's all I've got to go on right now - that and a hunch that she is the one I am looking for.

    Just wanted you to know that I followed up on the marriage certificate for Joseph Chopin and Anna VanAbel as you suggested after I got nowhere with either the obituary for Catherine Chopin or her death certificate. Having looked the marriage certificate over, I am reasonably convinced that she is indeed the sister of my great-grandmother Johannah Sheehy. Catherine's maiden name was given as "Catharine Sheheh" or possibly "Catharine Shehen." The handwriting is not too good, so I can't be absolutely sure, but the maiden name clearly starts out with "Shehe." However, the last letter is a bit of a challenge.
    Thanks for the tip! If you'd like a copy of the marriage certificate, I'll be happy to send it to you. I can try the fax again (I have your number) and I also have your address if the fax doesn't work.

    Karen, Thanks for the update. Yes, I would like a copy of the obits for my files. You never know what clue it may hold for myself or another researcher. My fax is my phone line, 858-571-8748, if you have a manual start from your end when you get a tone, great, sometimes mine doesn't catch it before the answering machine does.
    But, I think you have several good leads to find her maiden name (eventually) First, Outagamie County Records office in Appleton, would have her 1925 death certificate. (say hello to my cousin Sandy Romenesko who works in the office there)
    Next follow up with the Archives at the Diocese of Green Bay. (say Hello to John and Ms. Kris Matthies) The church burial records MIGHT list her maiden name, but more likely you would find it on the childrens' baptismal and/or marriage records. (Joseph Chopin and Annie VanAbel married 6/02/1903 at Holy Cross in Kaukauna
    see report for more info in notes...and also if your relative is her sister, she is likely to have been a baptismal godparent for at least one of Catherines children (even if not present) so you should look at all the records you can find.

    Joseph Chopin Is Dead - Was City Attorney of Kaukauna for Nine Years. leav es Wife and Two Children. Funeral Will be Held Saturday From Holy Cross Ca tholic Church.After being dangerously ill for several weeks Joseph Chopin died early Tue sday morning at his home on Sarah St. Mr. Chopin suffered nearly a year wi th rheumatism and a few weeks ago was taken suddenly ill so that he was co nfined to his bed. The sickness developed into pneumonia which result ed in an abcess of the lung so that an operation was performed last Saturd ay as a last resort to save his life. But all in vain, and Mr. Chopin sa nk rapidly until Tuesday when he became partially unconscious.Joseph Chopin was born at Duck Creek, Brown county on February 7, 1871 a nd came to Kaukauna with his parents in 1874. He grew up here and attend ed Holy Cross parochial school during his boyhood. A sad experience in M r. Chopin's life came in his seventeenth yearwhen he had the hand of his r ight arm completely severed by a paper machine in the Badger paper mill, t he accident happening the first morning he began work. This accident shap ed Mr. Chopin's future career for at once he reentered school finishing t he grade work and entered high school, graduating in 1895. Soon after grad uating, he entered Kent college of law of Chicago. He made a fine reco rd of law, completing his diploma in 1897. He then came to Kaukauna and be came a member of the law firm of Dawson & Chopin. After two years the fi rm was dissolved since which time he has been alone. He has been city atto rney for the past nine years. Mr. Chopin has held various offices of publ ic trust besides having been city attorney and alderman. His legal busine ss has grown within the last few years both in volume and importance. Jose ph Chopin was a charter member of Holy Cross Catholic Order of Foresters a nd also of Kaukauna Council of Knights of Columbus being advocate at the t ime of his death. He was chief Ranger of the Foresters for two years. No o ne in Kaukauna had a wider acquaintanceship locally than Joseph Chopin a nd few had as many friends. Joseph Chopin overcame his physical handic ap by untiring industry and persistance and his frank open face and kind ly disposition gained him many warm friends and companions. As soon as h is death was known to Mayor Martens ordered the flags on the city buildin gs to be put at half mast and called a special meeting of alderman to ma ke arrangements to attend the funeral.Joseph Chopin was married six years ago to Miss Anna Van Abel who with the ir two children Harold, of 4 years and Beatrice of ten months, are le ft to mourn his loss. Others surviving him are his parents, Mr. & Mr s. J. Chopin of this city; four sisters and two brothers as follows; Mr s. Susie Berens, Will Chopin of Kaukauna; John Chopin and Mrs. Alice He lf of Millinocket, Maine; Katie of Boston, mass.; and Anna of Portlad, Mai ne.
