    Obituary:
    James M. Porter, Resident of Sunnyvale
    Passed away peacefully at home on July 3, 2010 following a four-month illness with cancer. He was born in Kimberly, Wis., on Dec. 2, 1920. He graduated from Kimberly High School in 1938 and joined the Navy in 1942. During World War II he served as a sonarman aboard the destroyer USS CONY (DD-508), seeing action at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. He later served as a sonar instructor at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Other ships he served on included the USS CHARLES J. BADGER (DD-657), the USS DIACHENKO (APD-123), the USS EVANS (DE-1023), and the USS RENSHAW (DD 499).
    After retiring from the Navy as a chief petty officer in 1962, Jim worked in the electronics industry in San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. He retired from the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 1986 as an installation supervisor. After retiring he enjoyed golf, traveling on cruise ships, and was a member of Sons in Retirement Branch 62 in Sunnyvale.
    He is survived by his wife, Mary Porter, and son, Jon Porter, of Sunnyvale; sister Barbara Porter of Appleton, Wis.; niece Susan Krouscup of Oakland; and nephews David Porter of Rolling Meadows, IL; Bill Porter of Madison, Wis; Michael Porter of Menasha, Wis.; and Philip Vilaro of Roxboro, NC. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Appleton.
