Biography:
LOUIS WURL, a good citizen and representative farmer of Ellington township, Outagamie county, is of German descent, his grandparents having been natives of Brandenburg, Prussia, where they were farmers by occupation and quite prominent people. The family for many generations back were Protestants.

Ludwig Wurl, father of Louis, was born in Prussia in 1829. He received an excellent education and secured a clerkship under the government, which he held for a number of years. In 1851 he came to the United States, going first to Tennessee, where he remained some three years, thence coming to Outagamie county, Wis., where he purchased land. Later he moved to Dodge county, but in 1862 returned to Outagamie county, and settled permanently in Ellington township. here purchasing eighty acres of timberland, which he cleared. In 1858 he was married to Wilhelmina Schultz, who was a native of Prussia, born in 1831, and to this union were born three children: Louis; Emilie, now Mrs. John Thiel, of Cicero; and Welmi, now Mrs. Frank Mory, also of Cicero. Mr. Wurl was very fond of hunting and was considered an excellent marksman. He served ten months in the Civil war, enlisting in 1864 in Company F, of a Wisconsin cavalry regiment, and was honorably discharged, but died at St. Louis, on his way home, and was buried at Cairo, Ill. Mrs. Wurl, so suddenly left a widow with three small children, displayed much business tact in managing the affairs of the farm to yield them a comfortable income. Mr. Wurl was a member of the Evangelical Church, with which the family are also identified. Our subject was born in the town of Center, Outagamie county, October 1, 1859, and was educated in the schools of his native county, proving an apt pupil. He attended school until he was old enough to assist his mother on the farm, subsequently taking entire charge of the same, which in due time became his own. In 1885 he was married to Miss Louisa Weissenberg, who was born October 12, 1860, in Ellington, and they have two children, Selma and Frank, In politics Mr. Wurl is a Republican, and has served as chairman of the township board two years and as assessor for three years, and takes an active interest in all public matters. He is a member of the A. P. A.
