Eugene R. Hoffman, 88, formerly of Appleton, passed away August 21, 2007, in Nashville, Tennessee after a brief illness. He was born July 25, 1919, in Iron River, Michigan to Robert and Amy (Waite) Hoffman, deceased. He moved with his parents to Appleton in 1921. He attended Appleton schools and graduated from Appleton High School in 1937. He went to work with his father as a floor finisher until his father's death in 1941. January 11, 1941, he married his beloved wife Lillian Mary Schleis in Tisch Mills, Wisconsin who preceded him in death on January 16, 2005, after 64 years of marriage. He enlisted in the Army and was deployed December 1942 to Europe and was honorably discharged in October 1945. Mr. Hoffman was a lifelong member of VFW Harvey Pierre Post #2778, Appleton and American Legion Post #258, Little Chute.
Gene and Lillian along with their daughter, Kathy, continued to make their home in the house built by his parents. For over 30 years he and his wife operated Drivers Education, Inc., teaching many of today's drivers. In November of 2006, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to be closer to his daughter. He enjoyed sitting on the deck listening to music and singing along with the songs he knew. He and his daughter spent many hours touring old homes and just driving around to see the scenery.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two younger brothers: Donald and Iveaux, a sister and brother in law, Paul and Della (Schleis) Jaklin, a brother in law, George Stodola and many cousins.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Blums, Nashville, and her special friend Brad Chamberlain; a grandson, Brian Halverson, West Allis; a granddaughter Natalie Halverson, Waukesha, and her friend Brian Whitton, and a great- granddaughter Brianna Halverson. Other survivors include his special friend Wilma Christian, Appleton, extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Star of Hope Chapel in Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, Appleton on Tuesday, September 4, 2007. Viewing will be from 10-11 a.m. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion Post #258 of Little Chute following the funeral. He will be entombed alongside of his wife.
The family wishes to give a special thanks to Alive Hospice, Nashville, for providing care with dignity to Gene and the family.
