Gunnery Sgt. Craig Stevens, San Diego, Calif., 42, formerly of Dale, died on June 30, 2014. He died at the UC-San Diego hospital. A Wisconsin memorial service to be announced at a later date.

Ret. GySgt Craig Nicholas "Dirty" Stevens, 42, of Oceanside, CA, formerly of Dale, WI, born October 25, 1971, in Appleton, WI, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014 in San Diego, CA, unexpectedly from complications of surgery surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Craig was a retired GySgt, having served with the United States Marine Corps for twenty years before retiring in 2010. He volunteered to serve in Iraq, training Iraqis as border security personnel. After his honorable discharge, he was currently employed by Transocean International, working in offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
Craig grew up in Dale and graduated from New London Senior High School in 1990. He was a loyal Packers fan and Brewers fan. Craig also enjoyed surfing and riding his motorcycle.
Craig was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Louis and Rachel Schiesser; and paternal grandparents, Curtis and Dortha Stevens. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Sonoko Tokuyama-Stevens. Also surviving are his parents, Marguritte and Darwin LaPean of Belleville, IL, and Michael Stevens; siblings, twin brother, Bruce Stevens (Heidi) of Tucson, AZ; Heather (Jason) Poje of Chicago, IL; Amy (Jason) Whitaker of Belleville, IL; and Joshua LaPean of Belleville, IL. He is further survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Memorial services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at Zion United Church of Christ, W9815 State Road 96, Dale, WI, 54931, with Pastor Deckert officiating. Per Craig's wishes, his inurnment will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO, at a later date.

Craig N Stevens was born in Appleton Wisconsin on October 25 1971. He grew up in Dale Wisconsin attended and graduated from New London High school in June of 1990 while spending the Majority of his senior Year in the delayed entry program preparing for Marine Corps Recruit Training. Craig graduated from Camp Marine Corps Recruit Training in November of 1990 and received orders for Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton California. While there he was trained in field Craft, Small unit tactics, self defense, and automatic weapon employment as well as conducting day and night patrols. Completing this he reported to the Assault Amphibian School for training as a Basic Amphibious Assault Vehicle Repairman aboard Camp Delmar Camp Pendleton Ca. His training comprised of Data and Description of the Amphibious Assault Vehicle, land and water operation, disassembly repair and reassembly of the major components of the Vehicle.
Craig's First Duty Station in the Fleet Marine Force was the 2nd Fleet Service Support Group, aboard Camp Le Juene, North Carolina. In 1993 Craig received Orders to the Island Of Okinawa Japan where he was stationed at 3rd FSSG aboard Camp Kinser. It was while stationed on Okinawa where he met, Ms. Sonoko Tokuyama and on December the 3rd of 1993 they were married.
Craig soon thereafter reported back to the AAS Battalion this time as a Sergeant and now a Section Maintenance Chief. He was responsible for the mechanics in his section and ensuring his vehicles were prepared for field training. Once there Craig soon distinguished himself and was soon recommended for the Intermediate Maintenance Course and shortly thereafter selected for Staff Sergeant and recommended for the Career Course where he was prepared for a career in the Marines. Subjects included Military Law, Uniform Regulations, Close order drill and Counseling junior Marines.
Craig remained at the AAS Bn, until February of 1999 whereupon he reported back to Okinawa to 3rd FSSG and worked in the Maintenance Operations Center. Highlights of his tour there included assignment as the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Recovery Chief and eventually the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Ordnance Chief. This assignment allowed him to travel extensively in Asia, including the Philippines, Thailand and Korea.
In 2004 Craig reported in to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion at Camp Pendleton Ca. as the Assistant Maintenance Chief in Headquarters and Service Company Maintenance Platoon. Shortly upon arriving and eager to get into the fight in Iraq or Afghanistan, Craig volunteered to join a Mobile Training Team as an Individual Augment. This duty normally designated to an Army Special forces 12 Man "A" Team involved rigorous weapons, tactics and Modern Standard Arabic Language training in Camp Le Juene North Carolina. Once Prepared, Craig's Team deployed to western Iraq where they trained Iraqi volunteers as Border Security personnel.
Craig returned to the United States In June of 2006 and checked back into the 3D AABN in the same billet as previous held. Craig held this billet until he was hand select as an instructor at AAS Bn. Craig remained at this Post until he retired honorably on the 25th of June 2010.
Now a Civilian, Mr. Craig Stevens began working for Claxton Logistics in the Marine Corps Logistical Base Barstow Ca. Craig's main responsibility was cataloguing USMC equipment stockpiles. Craig held this position until he was recruited by Transocean international, the World's Foremost deep water drilling contractor. Craig was hired as a subsea Trainee and took part in an intense training program. His new profession was now Maintaining Subsea Blow out preventers on the surface and up to 12,000 Ft below the surface. Training included 4 weeks at West Engineering, Katy Tx. and 4 Modules offered by Lloyds in the Netherlands, officially qualifying him as a Subsea engineer in June of 2014. Craig was assigned to the Transocean, Deepwater Clear Leader, involved in drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico.
Gunnery Sergeant Craig N. Stevens's personal awards include The Navy Commendation with 1 gold star the Navy achievement medal and the Good conduct Medal 6th award.
