Vanden Heuvel, Mary Jane (VandeHey, Schmidt)
Mary Jane, age 64, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Jane (Nackers) Vande Hey, born January 28, 1945, in Appleton, Wisconsin, went on to eternal life on February 15, 2009, after a year-long battle with cancer. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her first husband (1965-1969), Bernie Schmidt, second husband (1970-1971) Jim Wittmann, and Carl Vanden Heuvel, who she wed on June 7th, 1974. Carl and Mary Jane resided in Kaukauna, WI, until Carl's retirement in 2002; then moved to Bradenton, Florida. There they enjoyed a wonderful tropical lifestyle at Bay Shore Windmill Village retirement community. Due to a short but valiant battle with cancer, Carl went on to eternal life January 15, 2008. Due to ill health, Mary Jane moved to Minnesota in March 2008, to be closer to her children.
Special recognition goes to daughter, Kelly Gould, for her exceptional care of her mother. Mary Jane's family is grateful that her sister, Bonnie Gilles, stayed with and cared for her through the end of her journey here.
Mary Jane is survived by her children and stepchildren and was a loving grandma to fourteen grandchildren: Dave Vanden Heuvel and his wife, Karen, and their children Kristy, Katy and Kari, Parker, CO; Leo Schmidt and his wife, Jane Andersen, Minneapolis, MN; Jarrod Schmidt and his wife, Kari, and their sons, Jacob and Ryan, Waukesha, WI; Dawn Vanden Heuvel and her children, Travis Doerfler, Brian and Carly Flunker, Appleton, WI; Kelly Gould and her husband, Jon, and their children, Jonathan, Tyler and Megan, Eagan, MN; Jenny Brueckner and her husband, Armin, and their children, Abraham, Benjamin, and Evelyn, Eagan, MN.
Mary Jane is also survived by her mother, Anna Jane Vande Hey; her brothers, Ken (Jan), Mark (Sue), and Steve (Peg); and her sisters, Bonnie (John) Gilles and Ellen (Dan) Eisenschink. She is also survived by many friends, nieces and nephews.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Vande Hey, her brothers, Jim and Denis, and her infant niece, Mary Gilles.
Mary Jane was truly blessed by all the love, prayers, care and concern from family and friends. Thank you to the residents and staff of The Commons on Marice, the Masonic Cancer Center, and Fairview Hospice. It is her desire to be cremated and have her ashes spread at the same location as her husband, Carl, in the Gulf of Mexico.
A memorial celebration of their lives of both Mary Jane and Carl will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at The Mariner, 1100 Hyland Avenue, in Kaukauna, WI. Gathering will be from 1-5 p.m. with a toast and tribute from 3-4 p.m.
