    Gen Carlson, 92, longtime Marinette resident, passed away Wednesday evening, January 30, 2013, at Peabody Manor's Birch Cottage in Appleton The former Florence Hougland was born October 26, 1920 in Crivitz and was the fifth of 12 children of the late Ina and George Hougland. The family later moved to Peshtigo, where Gen attended local schools and graduated from Peshtigo High School. She attended and graduated from Marinette County Teachers College and later trained to be a Licensed Practical Nurse. She enjoyed a long career in nursing in hospitals in Marinette and Menominee, as well as private practice.
    Florence married Herbert J. Carlson on December 26, 1940. They owned and operated the CCC Motel for many years. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before Herb's passing on May 8, 2001.
    Gen is survived by her daughters Judith Nortch of Green Bay and Faye (Rudy) Cerasoli of Appleton, sons Herb (Beth) Carlson of Naperville, Illinois, Jeff (Sandra) Carlson of Austin, Texas. and Daniel Carlson of Appleton. In addition to her children, Gen leaves a legacy of 11 beautiful and loving grandchildren: David and Craig (Amanda) Nortch, Mara (J.P.) Pastore and Brian (Mary) Cerasoli, Michael and Joe (Michelle) Maas, Jennifer Maas (John) Reinke, Jason (Sara) and Josh (April) Carlson and Adria (Mark) Storer and Rochelle Carlson, and 19 precious great grandchildren: Zach, Ben, Sam, Gavin, Ollie and Ella Nortch, Jack Cerasoli, Lena and Tony Pastore, Austin, Aaron and Mariah Maas, Jacob, Alex and John Reinke, Delaney and Luke Carlson, and Miralei and Calysta Storer. She is further survived by a sister, Joan Jackson of Iowa City, Iowa, her sister-in-law, Laura Liegeois and special friend, Brenda Schwartz.
    In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Maas, infant son Martin and six brothers and four sisters.
    Gen will be fondly remembered as the ultimate caregiver from both her career as a nurse and life as a mother and grandmother. She genuinely cared about others, was compassionate and her life story will read as someone who gave unconditional love, had a wonderful sense of humor and set a lasting example of what a good person does during their lifetime.
    The family wishes to acknowledge and thank, with heartfelt appreciation, the extraordinary staff at Birch Cottage in Appleton. Their attentive and compassionate care made Gen feel as though she were at home throughout her five year residency.
    Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home in Marinette after 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. with Pastor Tom Mackay officiating. Entombment will be in Forest Home Mausoleum.
