FIRE VICTIM IN FAIR CONDITION AT KAU HOSPITAL
Kaukauna Community Hospital officials Thursday morning reported that Mr s. W. M. Hermas, 629 George st., was still in fair condition as a resu lt of burns sustained at about noon on Tuesday when her clothing was accid entally ignited as she talked on a telephone. Fire chief William Haupt ex plained that Mrs. Hermans was apparently standing near a stove, while talk ing on the telephone when her apron strings were ignited on a burner and t he fire rapidly spread to her other clothing. Mrs. Hermans, who was alo ne in the house at the time of the mishap, wetted rugs and wrapped them ar ound herself to extinguish the fire. The woman to whom Mrs. Hermans was t alking called neighbors who in turn summoned the City ambulance. At the h ospital she is being treated for third and first degree burns over her bod y.

FIRE ACCIDENT VICTIM DIES FRIDAY MORNING
Mrs. William Hermans severely Burned Dec. 2 When Clothing Ignited.
Mrs. Wm. (Christine) Hermans, 42, 629 George st., died at 4 am Friday at Kaukauna community hospital as a result of burns suffered in a accide nt at her home on Dec. 2. Funeral services were conducted yesturday at Ho ly Cross Catholic church. The accident occurred when an apron string drop ped across a hot stove burner as she was talking on the telephone, igniti ng the apron and the flames rapidly spread to her other garments. She rush ed to the bathroom, poured water in the tub and extinguished the fire wi th rugs which she wetted in the tub. Her burning clothing ignited a plast ic shower curtain which she pulled down into the tub, but in so doing caus ed further burns to her body. She was taken to the Kaukauna hospital in t he City ambulance, where she was treated for first and third dregree burn s. The woman to whom Mrs. Hermans was talking called a neighbor, who rush ed over to the Hermans home and then called the fire department. Mrs. Her mans was born May 23, 1916, in Kaukauna, and resided here all her life. S he was a member of the Woman's Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Ann's Cou rt No. 226, and the Altar Society, of Holy Cross Church. Funeral servic es were held Monday at 9 am from the Greenwood Funeral home, and at 9: 30 am at Holy Cross Catholic church. The pastor, the Rev. Andrew J. Quell a, officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery. Honorary pallbeare rs were Mrs. William Jansen, Mrs. Mary Heindl, Mrs. Edith Kramer, Mrs. Be rt Roberts, Mrs. Walter Martzahl and Mrs. Elmer Doolittle. Active pallbea rers were Daniel and Thomas Verkuilen, John and William Britten, Orville B oogart and Robert Verkuilen. She is survived by a daughter, Marion, at ho me; a son, Jack, a policeman at Appleton; seven brothers, Martin Verkuile n, Kaukauna, Jake and Elmer Verkuilen, Appleton, Sylvester Verkuilen, DePe re, Jack Verkuilen, Little Chute, Joseph Verkuilen, Green Bay, and Geor ge Verkuilen, Black Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Albert Boogart, Sturgeon Ba y, and Mrs. Ray Britten, Kaukauna; and one grandchild. Exactly one ye ar prior to Mrs. Herman's accident, funeral services were conducted for h er husband, who died on November 29, following a 1 1/2 year illness.

John (Jack) J. Herman s, Sr. 2413 N. Locust, Appleton. Age 65, passed away Saturday, April 1 0, 1999 at home with his family at his side. He was born August 7, 19 33 in Kaukauna, the son of the late William and Christine (Verkuilen) Herm ans. Jack enjoyed hunting and playing bingo with his friends. He graduat ed from Kaukauna High School in 1951. He was a Korean War veteran, servi ng in the U.S. Navy. Jack held many jobs, including his duties as an Appl eton Police officer for eight years, a Grand Chute Police officer for thr ee years; he worked for United Foods for 19 years and Smiths Security f or five years. Jack is survived by his wife of 42 years, Germaine (Kempe n) Hermans; his children: Tim Hermans, Laurie Filen, Susan (Frank) Elmor e, Michael Hermans, John Jr. (Jenny) Hermans, Jayne (Dan) Flenz, Joe (Marc ie) Hermans and Jeff Hermans; 17 grandchildren, a sister, Marion (Tom) Wes t; a brother, Jim (Jeannine) Roiger. Jack was preceded in death by his pa rents and a daughter, Mary. The funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesda y, April 13, 1999 at the Fargo Funeral Home 400 W. Wisconsin Ave. Kaukan ua 766-6200 with the Father Bill Barta officiating. Burial will be in Ho ly Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna. Friends may call directly at the funeral ho me on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
