    Obituary:
Dorothy Elizabeth VanGheem Hoffman, born October 10, 1921 to the late Harry L. and Dorothy (Gasall) VanGheem of De Pere, Wisconsin at Deaconess (now Bellin) Hospital in Green Bay, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 2, 2017.
She grew up on a farm near Pulaski, Wisconsin. During WWII she worked at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. in Milwaukee as a lathe machinist, not knowing until after the war she made parts for the Manhattan Project. She was awarded a citation of service signed by the Secretary of War on August 6, 1945.
Dorothy married Urban Hoffman on January 15, 1955 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Pulaski. They owned and operated Hoffman's Foot-so-Port Shoe Store in downtown Appleton until they retired in 1990. They lived on the north shore of Lake Winnebago in the Village of Harrison since 1967. Urban passed away at home on July 10, 2007. They were married 52 years. Family was her top priority, always there when help was needed. She cherished her daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters: Marcia (Martin) Weyers and Jennifer Hoffman, grandchildren Ross (Stephanie) Weyers, Ann Weyers de Ibarra (Pedro), Philip Weyers, and Hayley Weyers, great-grandchildren Layla, Myles, Evelyn, Xavier, Elysium and baby due in November, sisters Edith Mroczynski and Joan Rueden, sister-in-law Dorothy (Van Rossum) Hoffman and numerous nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
She is preceded in death by her husband Urban, parents Harry and Dorothy, brothers Elmer and Vernon (infant) VanGheem, brothers-in-law Larry Longtine, Leonard Mroczynski, and Basil Rueden, sister-in-law Dorothy (Hackl) VanGheem, Urban's parents Phil and Agnes (Griesbach) Hoffman, siblings Marcella Hoffman, John & Alice (Beschta) Hoffman, Dorothy & Charles Weber, Rita Hoffman, Ken & Rita (Schumacher) Hoffman, Elmer & Florence (Phelan) Hoffman, infants Hedwig, Raymond and Rosanne.
Dorothy was a wonderful cake decorator making several wedding cakes, enjoyed painting and tinting photographs. She only attended school through 8th grade, but was an avid reader, continuing to learn until macular degeneration robbed this ability. She had many "Letters to the Editor" published throughout the years and was an early volunteer for GASP (Group Against Smoking Pollution). Dorothy lobbied for freedom of second hand smoke and appeared in local parades for the American Lung Association. She shared her knowledge of gardening and canning with her children and then grandchildren. With a fantastic memory for details, she shared much family history and genealogy. She could recite old poems and songs sung to her by her mother. We will miss and cherish her always.
A Mass of Christian burial for Dorothy will be held 11: 00 AM on Saturday May 6, 2017 at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH - Darboy, E2796 Calumet Street, Appleton, with Fr. Robert Kollath officiating. Visitation for Dorothy will be held at the church Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 until 10:45 AM, with Mass to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, DePere.
The family is greatly thankful to the caregivers of ThedaCare at Home and Hospice, Calumet County Meals on Wheels, Holy Spirit Parish lay ministers, Dr. Montgomery Elmer, neighbors and friends for their wonderful care and attention to Dorothy.
