At a dancing party and baquet held at Antigo on Tuesday evening under the auspicies of the ladies auxillary of B. of L. F. & E. at which times members of (same) who servered in World's War were presented with a silver medal from th eGrand Lodge with the following inscription on it"Presented to Grand Lodge to Members, In Grateful Recognition of a Duty Well and Cheerfully performed".

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilpolt of Kaukauna were listening to a National Broadcasting radio program Tuesday evening during which $1,000 is given away each week by telephone. When the time came for the awarding the money, Mrs. Wilpolt remarked that "anyone in the United States can win." Just then the telephone rang and she answered it. The voice on the other end was from New York and from the radio program and was informed that they had won $2,800 and the money would be sent to the western union office in Appleton. (Nov. 8, 1939)

Henry Wilpolt retired after 51 years with the C. & N. W. Railroad. Wilpolt came to Kaukauna with his parents when he was a young boy. His father died when he was twelve and at thirteen, to support his mother and four younger brothers and sisters, he started work at the Combined Locks Pulp mill. There were two shifts 10-hour days and 14-hour nights. The wages were 50c a day for either shift. After five years of mill work Henry decided to work for the railroad. He started in 1908 at 20c per hour.

1958 Kaukauna Times Friday, June 6, 1958; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilpolt, 3 10 W. Fourth street returned home recently after spending a vacation in Co lorado. They traveled over the Royal Gorge bridge, which is 1,053 feet ab ove the Arkansas river in Colorado. Their train stopped for ten minut es to allow the passengers to view the scene from the highest bridge abo ve water. At Grand Junction they visited with their son, Ralph Wilpolt a nd his family. At Denver, they spent some time with Mrs. Rose Appleton Ha en. The Wilpolts traveled through scenic Muffet Tunnel on their way home.

He was born M ay 7, 1887 in Marinette and lived in Hollandtown for a short time and h ad been a Kaukauna resident for about 60 years. Mr. Wilpolt had lived in K imberly and Manitowoc the past few years. He completed 50 years of servi ce with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and was a lifetime honoray m ember of the Brotherhood Locomotive Engineers, a life member of the Kaukau na Elks Lodge No. 962, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Kimberly G olden Age Club. Survivors are his wife Dora; two daughters, Mrs. Norbert ( Adele) Noie, Kaukauna and Mrs. Konrad (Dorothy) Tuchscherer, Neenah; a s on Ralph, Sydney Australia; a brother Green Bay; a sister, Mrs. Edward (An n) Bay, Kaukauna, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral servi ces will be held Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Kaukau na with internment in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Description: Great White Fleet- When the Atlantic Fleet sailed from Hampton Roads, VA on 16 December 1907, it was a worldwide goodwill mission by President Theodore Roosevelt. The fleet consisted of sixteen new battleships painted white, with gilded scrollwork on their bows, six destroyers, and several auxiliary ships. On 16 December 1907 the USS Ohio passed from Hampton Roads, Virginia, in review before President Theodore Roosevelt attached to the 3rd Division under the command of Captain Charles W. Bartlett. Ohio was one of 16 Battleships participating in an unprecidented world cruise, today commonly referred to as the "Great White Fleet" because the ships were painted in peacetime "white" and "spar."Commanded by Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans, and later, Rear Admiral Charles S. Sperry, the feet made calls on the east and west coasts of South America, rounding the Horn in between, en route to San Francisco.By the time of the fleets departure from San Francisco for Puget Sound, command of Ohio had been transferred to Captain Thomas B. Howard.On 7 July 1908, Ohio and her sisters shaped their course west to Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia. On each visit, the American ships were welcomed with great enthusiasm, but none of their ports of call received them with such enthusiastic friendliness as Tokyo where they anchored 18 October. The fleet's presence in Japan symbolized both American friendship and strength and helped to ease dangerously strained relations between the two countries.The fleet put in at Amoy, returned to Yokohama held target practice in the Philippines, and was homeward-bound 1 December. After steaming through the Suez Canal 4 January 1909, the fleet made Mediterranean calls, before anchoring in Hampton Roads 22 February.

Albert Wilpolt, seaman, who enlisted in the navel service 4/23/1907 to serve 3 years came home Saturday from New York to visit his mother Mrs Sarah Wilpolt of the south side. Seaman Wilpolt has the distinction of serving on the battleship Ohio, the flagship of Admiral Robley D. Evans, who with his fleet of 16 battleships and more than that in number of coaling ships is to sail from Hampton Roads, VA December 15th for San Francisco, by way of the straights of Magellan, a trip of neary 14,000 miles. This great fleet about 50 ships will compose the greatest navel movement in the worlds history and the position held by Seaman Wilpolt was eagerly sought for by every Jacky in Uncle Sam's service. Young Wilpolt is a straight built vigorous young man who in his natty sailor togs makes a fine appearance. He will spend a month visiting his mother and his friends in the city after which he will join is commrades on board ship and commence getting everything in readiness for sailing on this great voyage.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus ladies. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Alex (Ruth) Schoening, of Chicago, Illinois; two sons: Clyde, of Appleton and Floyd, of Kaukauna; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, in 1960, and a daughter and son-in-law Bernard and Sally Lill. The funeral be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna with Father Mike Hoffman and Robert Kabat officiating. Internment will be in the parish cemetery.

The First World War, fought between 1914 and 1918, was the first of the gr eat world-wide conflicts of the twentieth century, pitting the 'Central Po wers' of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and smaller allies against the ' Entente,' notably the British Empire, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, the Un ited States, and their allies.Shortly after the British declaration of war in August 1914, Canada offer ed an initial contingent of 25,000 for service overseas. A second continge nt was offered in the autumn of 1914. The 1st Canadian Division was form ed from units of the first contingent in January 1915, and was fighti ng in France the following month. In September 1915, the Canadian Corps w as formed, incorporating the 1st and 2nd Canadian Divisions, and the Canad ian Cavalry Brigade. Further contingents and reinforcement drafts continu ed to be sent overseas. At the time of the Armistice in November 1918, t he Canadian Corps had expanded to include four infantry divisions and cor ps units. Other Canadian units, including some artillery batteries, engine ering companies, and railway and forestry troops, served directly under Br itish command in France and Belgium. Still other units, responsible for ad ministrative support, training, forestry and medical care, served in Engla nd. The Canadian Expeditionary Force, as the army raised during the Fir st World War was designated, grew in the course of the conflict to 619,63 6, of whom 424,589 served in Europe.The Ministry of Militia and Defence (whose records are described by the Na tional Archives as Record Group [RG] 9), the predecessor of the Departme nt of National Defence today, was responsible for the recruitment, prelimi nary training and dispatch overseas of recruits for the CEF.The Ministry of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada (whose records a re described by the National Archives as RG 150) was created by an Order-i n-Council dated 28 October 1916 (P.C. 2651) to oversee the administrati on of the CEF. The Ministry functioned as the liaison between the Canadi an government and the British government, the War Office and British Gener al Headquarters. It had broad responsibility for all matters connected wi th the administration of the CEF. Whereas the CEF was placed under the con trol of the British military authorities for operational purposes, respons ibility for all other matters (including finance, logistics, training a nd reinforcement) fell to the Ministry of the Overseas Military Forc es of Canada.With the end of conflict in Europe, the repatriation of the CEF, and the f inal settlement of financial arrangements with the British, the Minist ry of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada ceased to exist on 8 June 19 20 (P.C. 1705, 26 July 1920). All records relating to the CEF were consoli dated in Ottawa within the Ministry of Militia and Defence.
Attestation Papers and Enlistment FormsVolunteers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force were questioned at the pla ce of enlistment to complete the Attestation papers which included the rec ruit's name and address, next-of-kin, date and place of birth, occupatio n, previous military service, and distinguishing physical characteristic s. Recruits were asked to sign their Attestation papers, indicating the ir willingness to serve overseas. By contrast, men who were drafted into t he CEF under the provisions of the Military Service Act (1917) complet ed a far simpler form which included their name, date of recruitment, a nd compliance with requirements for registration.This series consists of approximately 620,000 individual Attestation pape rs and Military Service Act Enlistment forms. They were completed in tripl icate at the time of enrolment in the CEF. At least one copy of the Attest ation papers or Enlistment form accompanied the CEF member overseas, whe re it was placed on the individual personnel file at the Ministry of the O verseas Military Forces of Canada in London.Paper originals of the Attestation papers and Enlistment forms are describ ed by the National Archives of Canada as RG 9, II B8, Vols. 1-1256. They m easure 72.9 metres in extent.

In World War II, ALL merchant ships and their crews were placed under mili tary control by virtue of the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, which designat ed them as "SHIPS OF WAR", and each merchant ship had a U.S. Navy Armed Gu ard Gun crew assigned to each to help defend the ship from the enemy.By the end on 1949, there were few jobs left for merchant seaman as many s hips were flying foreign flags as part of the U.S. government's Lend/Lea se program, since our allies had lost their merchant fleets during the wa r. leaving very few for American seamen to obtain jobs.During World War II, 1 out of 25 merchant seaman lost his life, this is wi th only about 250,000 serving as merchant seaman, but this doesn't cover t hose who received injuries that prevented them from returning to sea. On January19, 1988, those men who served on ocean-going merchant ships from December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945 were granted veteran status under Public Law 95-202.

Louis Wilpolt, 45, 807 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, died at 4 o'clock this morning at the Veterans' hospital at Wood, WI. after a 3 month illness. Born March 22, 1896, at Hollandtown, he was a member of the Kaukauna Fire Department since March 1934, and formerly was employed as a tinsmith for the Haas Hardware Company, Kaukauna and the Chicago and Northwestern railway. He was a service officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and past commander of the American Legion Post no. 41, at Kaukauna. He was wounded in service, overseas, having been a sergeant in Company H, 128th Infantry, 32nd Division. He was a member of the Wisconsin Paid Fireman's association and of the International Association of Firefighters.The body will arrive in Kaukauna at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon and will be taken to Greenwood funeral home. Survivors are two daughters, Miss Lorraine Wilpolt, Chicago and Miss Evelyn Wilpolt, Kaukauna and one son, Gene, Kaukauna; four brothers: Henry, Kaukauna, Albert, Minneapolis, John, New York City, and Richard, Hudson Falls, N.Y. and one sister, Mrs. Ed Bay, Kaukauna.

Richard B. Wilpolt, McCormi ck Home, Green BayAge 79, died Friday evening in Green Bay after a long illness. He was bo rn April 6, 1898 in the town of Holland. Mr. Wilpolt formerly worked for t he Union Bag Paper Company, Kaukauna then the Union Bag Paper Company Huds on Falls, New York. He was also employed by Thilmony Pulp and Paper, Kauka una. He retired in 1955 from The Fox Paper Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. Surv ivors include two daughters: Mrs. Riley (Carole) Solie, Appleton; and Mr s. Frank (Marge) Carey, Cincinnati; a brother, (Incorrect, he is a son) Gl en Wilpolt, Oakland, California, a sister Mrs Ann Bay, Kaukauna; and 11 gr andchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Church w ith Father Mike Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemeter y. Friends may call at the Fargo Funeral Home, Kaukauna after 4pm Monda y. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 Monday evening.

I do not find him at St. Mary Kaukauna or at St. John's in Antigo. Chances seem best that he died sometime soon after he was born at Hollandtown. The problem there is there is a gap from 1896 through 1900. Just goes from one page to the next with this big gap. I have no idea what would have happened. Take care, Kris Beisser Matthies, CGRS

The appointment of Ralph H. Wilpolt as Rallymaster for the 1956 Alumni Rally was announced this week in the Alumni News annual bulletin of the Kaukauna high school Alumni Association. He will preside throughout the day long reunion which is scheduled to get underway 3 PM on Saturday, June 16. The KHS class of 1930 is particular proud and happy over the appointment of one of their classmates as the Rallymaster for this year.

Ralph H. Wilpolt A former resident of Kaukauna, age 72, died Monday, August 20, 1984 in S un City, Arizona. His parents were the late Henry and Dora Wilpolt. He gra duated from Kaukauna High School and Lawrence University. He received h is Masters Degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois whe re he majored in Geology. He was a professor of Geology at the New Mexi co School of Mines, New Mexico. Later he was employed with the U.S. Geolog ical Survey and was Chief Geologist in the Southwest for the Atomin Energ ey Commision. His Various positions took him to many parts of the worl d. He was also a member of the American Geological Society. In 1956 he ret urned to Kaukauna where he was chosen as the Rally Master for the Kaukau na High School Alumni Association Annual reunion. After retiring he serv ed as a consultant working for the Department of Energy with the U.S. Atom ic Agency in Vienna, Austria. Survivors include his wife, Augusta, Sun Cit y, Arizona; three sons: David, James and Robert of the Denver, Colorado ar ea; seven grandchildren; and two sisters: Mrs. Norbert F. (Adele) Noie, Ka ukauna; Mrs. K.H. (Dorothy) Tuchscherer, Ephraim.

Adele married Norbert Noie on October 24, 1935 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kaukauna. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Kaukauna Community Hospital Auxilary. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Norbert; two sons Tom and Geraldine Noie of Buffalo Grove, IL and Scott and Jill Noie of Oak Creek WI,and a daughter Nancy of Chicago, IL. eight grandchildren Tom (Jennifer), Christopher (Jennifer), Jennifer, Amy, Patrick, Eric , Brian and Sean Noie; a great grandchild Tyler Noie and a sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Konrad Tuchscherer of Sister Bay, WI. Bay, Clyde Edward;Age 93, passed away after a short illness Monday, May 19, 2003 in Paraguay, South America. He was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin and recently resided in southwestern Paraguay and Madison, Wisconsin. He received his B. S. in agronomy from the University of Wisconsin in 1937 and M.S in 1952. He was a Soil Scientist with the US Dept. of Agriculture in Madison, WI and Marcellus, NY until 1966. From 1966 - 1975 he was an Agriculture Advisor employed with the US Agency of International Development in Vietnam. In 1975 Clyde participated in operation "Baby Lift", when 160 Vietnamese babies and children were evacuated from Saigon. Clyde joined the Peace Corp 1977 and went to Paraguay where he met his wife, Celmira (Ellie ). In 1998, they built a Health Clinic in rural Paraguay, where medical treatment is very scarce. He was a retired colonel in the US Army and served in the China/Burma/India Theater during World War II. Clyde was a past president of the Cayuga County Association for Retarded Children in Auburn, NY, a participant with the Madison Opportunity Center Inc., a life member of Wisconsin Alumni Assn, Memorial Union, Kaukauna High School Alumni Assn., Life Science Assn., The Retired Officers Assn., Reserve Officers Assn., Merrill's Marauders and American Legion. Clyde is survived by his wife, Celmira of Paraguay; stepdaughter, Laura of Geneva, NY; and three sons; C.E, "Clyde" of Madison, Wisconsin; John of Auburn, NY; and Ted of Jamesville, NY. A memorial service will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 3, 2003 at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Memorials may be contributed to the Clyde E. Bay Foundation Clinic and sent to the funeral home.

Floyd Bay passed away Monday, December 1, 2003 after a short illness at Appleton Medical Center. He was born July 23, 1912 to the late Edwin and Anne Bay.
Like those of his generation, Floyd faced tremendous challenges early in life. At the age of 17 the stock market collapsed commencing the worst economic depression in history culminating in World War II. As a teen, he worked on a cousin's farm for room and board and enough firewood to heat the family home during winter. He often hopped freight trains in search of work throughout the Midwest and South. During World War II, he joined the military serving with the Seabees in the South Pacific. Following the war, he returned to Kaukauna to reunite with his family and work as an electrician for Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company from which he retired in 1977.
He is survived by his "Old Crony," best friend and loving wife of 63 years, Trudy (Drucilla); sons Buck (Bruce) and wife Jackie, St. Louis, MO; Dan and wife Deborah, San Rafael, CA; Scott (Michael), Minneapolis, MN; Tom, Kaukauna; and daughter Debra and her husband Wayne Nighorn, Pulaski, WI; sister-in-law, Celmira Bay, Asuncion, Paraguay. Additionally, 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, many loving nieces and nephews survive him. Besides his parents, sisters Sallie and Ruth, and, recently, brother Clyde preceded him in death.
As were his wishes there will be no funeral. A celebration of his memory and life will be held at Van Abel's Supper Club in Hollandtown on Saturday, January 17, 2004 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Friends who knew Floyd are welcome to join the family and share in this celebration. Thereafter, she worked as a nurse for Dr. Landis and the Visiting Nurse Association in Appleton, Wisconsin. On 9/17/49 she married Franklin L. Nehs (deceased 5/7/79). They had three children: Vicki F. (deceased 12/5/71), Franklin S. and Randall L. (deceased 10/28/88). Lorraine permanently moved to Tempe, Arizona, in October 1994.
Lorraine is survived by her brother, Gene L. Wilpolt, Arlington, Wisconsin; her son, Franklin S. Nehs, Encinitas, California; her daughter-in-law, Sherry Nehs, New York, New York; and grandson, Eric Nehs, New York, New York.

no, i never wrote for Stars & Stripes....however, there is a very interesting connection...i was transferred from Japanese occupation 24th infantry div to stars & stripes in approx feb. 47 and appropriatedly reported only to find that i had been assigned to gen'l mcarthur 8th army hdq. in tokyo to report to the WVTR (armed forces radio tokyo) radio tokyo (50,000 watt station from which we broadcast to all of the armed forces in the far east at that time) later, the name was changed to encompass all of the armed forces.
at the time of my transfer to the radio station i was assigned to working in the news room assisting in the compilation of daily news reports from AP., UP.,INS, Reuters, etc.....however, before i could seen whats happening, the two senior news "reporters" were sent home for routine discharge and suddenly i was the "news editor" of Radio Tokyo WVTR at the ripe old age of 18.
when i also added a 5 minute daily sports cast to my daily routine it led up to the "color" commentry for the first annual Rice Bowl championship at the Nile Kinneck stadium betweten two champion occupation fomed forces teams played circa jan. 1 1948 (nile kinneck was decorated football player killed in the war.)
P.S. I was assigned to radio Tokyo BECAUSE THEY NEEDED SOMEONE WHO COULD TYPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Biography; The following are comments and recollections on the life of Glenn Wilpolt written in 2003.
I was born in Kaukauna, WI. on Dec. 16, 1928. My birth took place at home at 910 Desnoyer St. This was because my mother declined to go to the hospital which was then under a Scarlet Measles quarantine and no visitors were being allowed into the hospital. I have few recollections of my early life in Kaukauna. It was in the middle of the depression ... my father was probably lucky to have a job working at a service station prior to later working at the Union Bag paper company where he progressed to the position of "machine tender" on a paper machine. When Union Bag closed the Kaukauna mill circa 1936-37 our family was given the opportunity to move to Hudson Falls, N.Y. along with 5 other families to work in the mill in that city. My first three grades in school were at Holy Cross school in Kaukauna. Following our move to Hudson Falls I attended St. Mary's school from grades four to eight. I was always a fairly good student and participated in the usual activities of a boy my age. Incidentally, at St. Mary's I was known as "John" Wilpolt because the sisters said there was no saint named "Glenn." On Dec. 26, 1941 my mother died following a relatively short illness, The cause of death was largely unknown at that time but a subsequent autopsy indicated cancer of the colon as we know it today. This tragedy forced my father to move his three children back to Kaukauna where family relatives "housed" us for several months while dad transitioned himself back to Kaukauna. Sisters Carole and Marge lived with Aunt Ann & Uncle Sun Goetzman and I lived with Aunt Ann & Uncle Ed Bay. In the summer of 1942 we were reunited as a family in an upstairs flat at 1111 Y2 Oviatt St. In Kaukauna. An unknown number of years later, we moved to the south side of Kaukauna to an address which I have forgotten. (Hillcrest Ave.??) During this period of Sept. 1942-46, I was a student at Kaukauna High School. In hindsight, they were very enjoyable years. I continued to be a fairly good student in the top 25% of my class and was involved in many activities. Among them were forensics, debate, honor society, student newspaper, boxing team and baseball co captain. In my junior year our debate team placed second in the State of Wisconsin final competition. And my senior year oration won first place in the state finals held in Madison. In the summer months, American Legion baseball and evening league softball teams kept me occupied.My working "career" started in the summer of 1944 at the Gustman Chevrolet garage where I earned $.40 an hour washing used cars in the lot or hand sanding primer coats in the body shop. This was followed in 1945 with shift work at the Thilmany Paper Co. during the summer months while trying to play baseball in between shifts. It was "grunt" labor but a lot better than $.40 an hour!! But it was working for the Kaukauna Times which helped to shape much of my future. In my junior year of high school, my journalism teacher recommended me to the publisher of the K Times as the high school correspondent. This included the various athletic events and led to the eventual opportunity as a local reporter. The experience gained here would ultimately influence a choice military assignment and later opportunities at the Univ. Of Wisconsin. Upon graduation from KHS in 1946 I was faced with some major decisions . .. My mill work experience made it clear to me that this was not the future for me. I was offered a small scholarship at Ripon College (an excellent liberal arts school) but my meager savings would not carry me for long in any college program. With the end of WWII in Aug. 1945, the govt. sponsored GI Bill was winding down and was programmed to end in the near future (although that never happened) So, at age 17, with my fathers signed permission, I enlisted in the U.S. Army for an 18 month tour of duty. This turned out to be the best career decision I would ever make! On Oct, 3, 1946 I was sworn into the regular U.S. Army and sent to Camp Lee (now Fort Lee) Virginia for basic training. Following 10 weeks of basic training, I was ordered to Camp Stoneman, California (Pittsburgh) and later assignment to the occupation army in Japan. After 10 days on a troop ship crossing the Pacific Ocean, and upon arrival at Yokohama, Japan I was sent to the 24th Infantry Division stationed in Sasebo, on the southernmost island of Kyushu, Japan. This was not a fun assignment!! In fact, it was an intensified duplication of basic training.Fortunately, I soon saw an ad in the army newspaper "Stars & Stripes" for anyone with some reporting experience ( thanks Kaukauna Times) and I responded with a resume' that may have gilded the lily a bit. Well over a month later transfer papers arrived in Sasebo and I was on my way back to Yokohama and the Stars & Stripes. But by the time I arrived they no longer needed more reporters and I was sent to the Armed Forces Radio Station WVTR in Tokyo as a clerk-typist!! (thank you Miss Porterville for KHS typing) WVTR was a 50,000 watt clear channel station serving all of Japan and the Southeast Asian occupation army. Shortly after my arrival, the two men working in the news room were sent home for discharge and almost before I could say "Sayonara", I was the News Editor at Radio Tokyo!! In addition, I announced a short sports report daily at 5:15 p.m. This in turn led to another "accidental" assignment: When our "color" announcer for t he first annual "Rice Bowl" football game on Jan. 1, 1948 came down with laryngitis, I was the fall back guy and I somehow stumbled through the game with the play by play man doing most of the talking.These were exciting times for me in the occupation army. WVTR was part of 8th Army Headquarters from which Gen. Douglas MacArthur was administering the occupation and restructuring the economy of Japan. I was responsible for the 12 noon and 6 p.m. daily news reports (MacArthur listened to the 6p.m.) The war crimes trials were ongoing with Tojo and cohorts and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were just getting started in recovery from the atomic bombs. With the U.S. downsizing the armed forces I was sent home for discharge about 3 months early. With a little Armed Forces Radio influence I was fortunate to get a low priority flight authorization (vs. 10 days on troop ship) and I had my first airplane rides of my life. These were 6-8 hr. legs from Tokyo to Kwajalian (sp), Guam, Wake Island and Hawaii (where we were " forced" to spend several days waiting for room on a flight to Fairfield-Suisun AFB (now known as Travis AFB!) I was discharged from the army on J an 16, 1948. Following a period of "rest and recreation" I enrolled at the Univ. Of Wis consin in Madison in Sept of 1948. The next 3+ years led to a BS degree in Economics. Along the way I was able to use my newspaper experience in the advertising dept of the student newspaper The Daily Cardinal. Paid commissions as ad salesman, advertising manager and ultimately Business Manager helped to supplement the $75/month payment from the G.I. bill. Student loans were almost unheard of in those days and I was able to finance myself over the years with various part time jobs including another summer at the Kaukauna Times. After graduation in Feb. 1952 I took a job with the Ansul Chemical Co. In Marinette, Wis. Following a brief training period I was assigned to a sales territory in their Los Angeles office where I worked for the next three years. It was near the end of that time period that I met the love of my life, a nurse from Ellis, Kansas (near Hays). However, I had to leave California and transfer back to Marinette before I realized that I couldn't live without her. We were married in Los Angeles on June 30, 1956 and moved with all our earthly possessions to Marinette following a honeymoon in San Francisco.The next four years were spent in starting a family and working in the Market Research and New Product Planning Dept. Sons Jay, Mark and daughter Carrie were born in the State of Michigan because St. Joseph's Hospital is in the city of Menominee, Mi. just across the river from Marinette, WI. In 1962 the Glenn Wilpolt family left Marinette and moved to Arlington Hts ., III when Glenn took a position with Container Corp, of America in Chicago. While living in Arlington Hts. two more sons were added to the family ... Matthew and Andrew. In 1967 we were transferred to the CCA plant in Oakland, Ca. (Emeryville) as a field sales manager. When talk of further transfers intensified in 1971, we came to a "parting of the ways" with Container Corp. It was then that the opportunity of working for ones self presented itself and at age 41, after much soul searching, we embarked on a new career as an insurance broker with Farmers Insurance Group. After the first couple of years getting established there was no looking back as we built a profitable agency in the Fire & Casualty insurance industry. After 21 years (and a disastrous home fire which destroyed all personal belongings in 1991) we retired and lived happily ever after!!!

Glenn Wilpolt, aged 86 of Oakland passed away on December 12, 2015, in Oakland, Ca. after a brief illness, just four days short of his 87^th birthday. Glenn was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin on December 16, 1928, son of the late Richard and Margaret (Feller) Wilpolt. He graduated Kaukauna High School in 1946, and was Rally Master at the KHS 1966 Reunion. From Oct. 3, 1946 and Jan 28, 1948 he served in the US Army during the post WWII occupation force in Japan first in the 24th Infantry, but was transferred to MacArthur's 8th Army Hdqtrs in Tokyo and found himself assigned as the News Editor for WVTR Armed Forces Radio in Tokyo. Returning to Wisconsin he attended University of Wisconsin at Madison and along with debate class, softball, boxing and working on the Yearbook, he was in various positions on the daily newspaper, The Daily Cardinal, including Advertising Manager in 1950 and the Board of Directors in 1952. He was proud to be a Badger and he followed their sports teams, as well as his beloved Green Bay Packers, right to the end.
On June 30, 1956 he married Teresa Schuster in Los Angeles, CA. and honeymooned in San Francisco. The family lived in Wisconsin and Illinois until 1968 when the call came to move to California. They have been faithful members of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Oakland since the first month they arrived in California. He was an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance for many years retiring in 1991. Glenn was an avid golfer and was a member of Sequoyah Country Club until just last year and spoke often of his 2 holes in one.
In June 2006 Glenn and Terry hosted a large family reunion at Long Lake in Bloomer, WI for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Terry had been diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1993 and was moved into Mercy Assisted Living in 2007. For the last 8 years, Glenn has faithfully visited Terry 6 days a week arriving before lunch and leaving just before dinnertime. They loved being together whether on a cruise or just at home.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Teresa, five children: Jay Wilpolt of San Diego, CA, Mark Wilpolt of Chico, CA, Carrie Wilpolt (Kent Springer) of Pepperell, MA., Matt Wilpolt of Oakland, CA and Andy (Angelica) Wilpolt of Concord, CA. One granddaughter, Lily Wilpolt of Chico, CA; Two sisters Carole Solie of Appleton, WI; Marge Carey of Cincinnati, OH; sister-in-law Phyliss Schuster of Hays, KS.;.a brother in law Richard Schuster of Stockton, NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Lois, brothers and sisters in-law Riley Solie, Frank Carey; William Schuster, Fred Schuster, Gayle Schuster and Louis (Ruth) Schuster.
Funeral services will be at 10:AM on Wednesday December 30, 2015 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 30 Mandalay Rd. Oakland, CA. 94618 with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Oakland. Together Glenn and Terry will rest with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge, much like the one from their family home kitchen window.

Bay, Clyde E. VERONA - Clyde E. Bay Jr., age 62, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005. He was born in Madison on Dec. 7, 1942, the son of Clyde and Siverdean Bay. Clyde attended Madison Central High School and lived at Orchard Hill. He moved into an apartment until he became ill and then moved to Badger Prairie Health Care Center. Clyde, known to his friends as C.E. was an avid Badgers fan. He had season tickets to Badger football games for many years. C.E. loved to get his hair cut to look like Elroy Hirsch. He was also a lifelong Cubs fan. C.E. was devoted to watching Soul Train on Saturdays and to dancing the Watusi. He is survived by two brothers, John Bay of Auburn, N.Y., and Ted Bay of Jamesville, N.Y. According to the family's wishes there will be no services. Memorials may be made to Rise Up Inc., 122 E. See Image Miss Vicki Nehs, 1715 Hillcrest Dr., 20 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Franklin L. Nehs passed away at 8:10 p.m. Sunday. She was born May 24, 1951 in Appleton and graduated from Appleton High School West in 1969 and presently was a sophmore at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents she is also survived by two brothers; Franklin S. Nehs, University of Wisconsin and Randall at home, and her grandmother, Mrs. Clara Nehs, Neilsville, Wis. There will be no visitation. Private funeral services will be held at Wichmann Funeral Home with internment following at Highland Memorial Park. A memorial fund has been established for Appleton Public Schools.

When the Price Club and Costco merger started in late 1994, decided not to moved to Seattle buying offices (had moved for work from No. Cal to So. Cal in 83, then from LA to SD in 86) Was given the chance to bring the outsourced Travel Program into corporate. So bought a 1/2 milllion telephone switch, got national accreditation as a seller of travel, set up a call center, only to have the airline cut agency commissions in half 6 months later. Laid off over 40 personel and transitioned into selling cruises. 3 year growth from externally sourced to over 30 million annual travel sales. Moved to PriceSmart Quest program, "the sinking ship" which was losing 1 million a month...in 1997 Robert Price refused my plans of taking Price Costco Travel online as the "internet is not a venue for sales" even tho' we had already booked cruises online. Stress and health issues forced my retirement due to disability.
