Rites Wednesday for Matt J. Spranger, 82
Mathias (Matt) Spranger, 82, of the Town of Elderon, died Monday , at his home at 6:30 a.m. He had been in failing health for several years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Wittenberg, with Fr. Jerome Watry officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery south of Wittenberg.
Friends may call at the Schmidt Funeral Home in this village after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services for Mathias J. Spranger, 82, Town of Elderon, who died Monday, Nov. 25, were held at Church of the Holy Family in Wittenberg at 11: a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Jerome Watry officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery. The casket bearers were Gilbert Ploeger, Leslie Verkuilen, Lester Balthazor, Harry VanderKooy, Adolph Kitzman and John Spranger. The local Schmidt Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Mr. Spranger was born in Holland Town, Brown County, Nov. 3, 1881, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardt Spranger. His wife, the former Miss Antonetta Van DeHey, whom he married in the Town of Elderon Nov. 17, 1903, died in July 1960. They had farmed in the Town of Elderon during their marriage.
Mr. Spranger had served as town treasurer and clerk in the Town of Elderon.
Surviving are five sons, Raymond Spranger and Lester Spranger, Eland route 1, Orville Spranger, Wittenberg, Lyman Spranger, Elderon, and Herbert Spranger, Hatley; three daughters, Mrs. Albert Van Wetering, Chicago, Mrs. John Lukasko, Eland route 1, and Mrs. Herman Grissman, Medford; a brother, Gerhardt Spranger, Wittenberg; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest Lyons of New Jersey, and Mrs. Margaret Gracyalny, Menasha; 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was born February 24, 1906 in the town of Elderon, the son of the late Mathias and Antoinette (VanDeHey) Spranger.
Survivors include 2 brothers, Lyman, Wittenberg and Herbert, Hatley; 3 sisters, Lillian Van Wettering, Melrose Park, IL, Verna Lukasko, Eland and Adala (Herman) Grissman, Eland. In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death 3 brothers, Norman, Lester and Orville.
Funeral services were held April 7, 1982 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. Claude Zabinski, OFM officiated. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Lester John Spranger, age 67, Eland, died October 18, 1975 at Langlade Memorial Hospital, Antigo.
He was born January 22, 1908 in the town of Elderon, the son of the late Mathias and Antonetta (VanDeHey) Spranger. On October 23, 1937 he married Verna Podjaski in Wittenberg. She survives.
In addition to his wife, Lester is survived by 4 brothers, Raymond, Eland, Orville, Wittenberg, Lyman, Wittenberg and Herbert, Hatley; 3 sisters, Lillian VanWettering, Chicago, Verna Lukasko, Eland and Adala Grissman, Eland. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Norman.
Funeral services were held October 20, 1975 at St. William Catholic Church, Eland. The Rev. Claude Zabinski officiated. Interment was in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, Wittenberg.

He was born April 29, 1909 in the town of Elderon, the son of the late Mathias and Antoinette (VanDeHey) Spranger. On March 2, 1935 he married Theresa Miller in Bevent. She survives.

Funeral services were held May 14, 1979 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. Claude Zabinski officiated. Interment was in St. Philomena Cemetery, Birnamwood.

Verna Delia Lukasko, age 87, Eland, town of Elderon, died Friday, June 23, 2000 at her home.
She was born February 15, 1913 in the township of Elderon, the daughter of the late Mathias and Antonetta (VanDeHey) Spranger. On August 7, 1935, Verna was united in marriage to John Lukasko, Jr. in Birnamwood. He preceded her in death on January 10, 1974.
Survivors include four children, James (JoAnn) Lukasko, Edgar, Suzanne (Elton) Bauch, Birnamwood, Geri Starr, Eland and Elaine (Doug) Vertein, Milwaukee; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lyman Spranger, Wittenberg; three sisters-in-law, Martha Spranger, Hatley, Verna Spranger and Theresa Spranger, both of Wittenberg; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Verna was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet, two sisters, Adala Grissmann and Lillian VanWettering and five brothers, Norman, Lester, Raymond, Orville and Herbert Spranger.
Funeral services were held June 26, 2000 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. Michael Carroll officiated. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

She was born January 24, 1916 in the town of Elderon, the daughter of the late Mathias and Antonette (VandeHey) Spranger. On June 24, 1936 she married Herman Grissman in Wittenberg. He survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include 1 son, Robert (Marcia) Grissman, Medford; 2 daughters, Nathalie (Darrell) Means, Tuscon, AR and Betty (Richard) Fischer, Merrillan, WI; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Lyman Spranger, Elderon and Herbert Spranger, Hatley; and 2 sisters, Lillian VanWettering, Melrose Park, IL and Verna Lukasko, town of Elderon. Adala was preceded in death by 1 infant son, Herman, Jr. and 4 brothers, Lester, Raymond, Orville and Norman Spranger.

Lyman Joseph Spranger, age 82, formerly of Elderon, died Friday, August 18, 2000 at the Homme Home of Wittenberg under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
He was born December 2, 1917 in the town of Elderon, the son of the late Mathias and Antoinette (VanDeHey) Spranger. He was united in marriage to Grace Levandoski on October 2, 1943 in Bevent. She preceded him in death on December 18, 1990.
Survivors include 2 sons, Donald (Mary Ann) Spranger, Colby and Bruce (Laurie) Spranger, Hatley; 1 daughter, Mary (Larry) Krueger, Hatley; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter; 3 sisters-in-law, Martha Spranger, Hatley, Verna Spranger and Theresa Spranger, both of Wittenberg; and 1 brother-in-law, Herbert (Emily) Levandoski, Hatley. He was born November 6, 1920 in the town of Elderon, the son of the late Mathias and Antonetta (VanDeHey) Spranger.
On June 7, 1947 Herbert was united in marriage to Martha King in Bevent. She survives.
Herbert was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Roger (Marika) Spranger, Schofield and Roy (Theresa) Spranger, Birnamwood; three daughters, Carol (Richard) Kluck, Bevent, Diane (Thomas) McNeill, Provo, Utah and Linda (Tom) Steebs, Wittenberg; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Lillian VanWetering, Chicago and Verna Lukasko, town of Elderon; and one brother, Lyman Spranger, Elderon.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Lester, Raymond, Orville and Norman and one sister, Adala Grissman.
Funeral services were held June 9, 1993 at St. Florian Catholic Church, Hatley. The Rev. Thomas Abraham officiated. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
