Glenn R. Burgoyne, 99, of Green Bay, WI died on the 22nd of April, 2017 at the New Perspectives Senior Living surrounded by his children. He was born April 2, 1918 in Duck Creek, WI, the son of the late George and Mary (Bougie) Burgoyne. His brothers, Ward, Rudolph, Harris, and Bill along with his sisters, Marie and Nathalie preceded his death. On May 5, 1945, Glenn married Genevieve M. "Gen" Deloye, the love of his life and her death preceded his in 2013. They were married for 68 years.
Glenn graduated from West High School in Green Bay, WI with the class of 1936. He played Varsity Football until an injury sidelined his career. After high school Glenn attended Green Bay Business College where he was introduced to Genevieve by his cousin. After graduating, Glenn worked as a Clerk at People's Trust Bank until 1942 when he was offered a position in the office at Armour & Company. Upon his return from military service he became a cattle buyer which he loved and would continue for the next 40 years until his retirement in 1982, as a Head Procurement Manager. He told stories every evening at dinner about the brokers, farmers, truck drivers and yard crew he worked with. His favorite characters became a part of the family lore and a means of getting a laugh and a gentle "now Glenn" from Gen, which would make his day.
During World War II, Glenn served as an Army Supply Sergeant (from 1942 - 1945) with an American field hospital that supported Montgomery's British 8th Army as it fought Rommel's German Tank Corps from Egypt into Libya, Tunisia as well as Palestine. Later he accompanied the 8th Army during its campaigns in Sicily and the Italian mainland from which he returned to the U.S. on leave in April of 1945. He married Gen on May 5, 1945 and took her to Chicago for a short honeymoon which was soon followed by VE day and discharge later that year.
In 2013, Glenn was honored as a WWII Veteran, by taking part in the "Honor Flight" to Washington DC and was greeted upon his return to Green Bay by a welcome home appreciation by over 1000 well wishers and family at the airport.
Glenn was an avid poker and ping pong player during the war, sending his winnings back to Gen to save for their future life together. He and Gen wrote letters to one another on a daily basis. They had a storybook World War II romance that would culminate in their getting married and settling down initially in De Pere, WI. Glenn told colorful stories of the people he served with during the war all of his life. In his mind, he was lucky to be a boy from Duck Creek, who had not just seen the Middle East and Italy, but had kissed the Pope's ring while on a 3-day pass to Rome.
Glenn is survived by his six children with Genevieve: Virginia Burgoyne, Green Bay; Mark (Sandy) Burgoyne, Cedarburg; Paul (Mary Jo) Burgoyne, Milwaukee; Marie Burgoyne, Allouez; Claude (Vicki Smith) Burgoyne, Portland, OR; and Frank Burgoyne, San Francisco, CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew (Adrienne), Lauren, Jared, Tricia and Nettie (Dan); along with his great grandchildren, Brett, Jacob, Reese, Landon and Charlie.
Glenn was a lifelong Packer fan. He sold programs as a boy at City Stadium and held a season ticket throughout the Lombardi glory years. Glenn was chairman of the leadership committee for Boy Scouts Troop 10 at St. Joseph School for 15 years and all four of his sons completed the Eagle Scout rank. In addition, he was an active member in the Catholic Order of Foresters, Third Order of St. Francis, Holy Name Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister and Reader at St. Joseph Parish.
After Glenn's retirement in 1982 he took up golf, playing 6 days a week from early spring through late fall with a group of dedicated golf buddies. Only snow on the ground or heavy rain would stop them from playing. These men enriched his life until 2014 when, at age 96, he retired his clubs. In addition to golf, he and Gen remained active after retirement enjoying biking, cross country skiing and regular participation in local Bridge clubs. He had a lifelong love of whistling and often did so while helping Gen with the shopping or cooking.
A dedicated father and husband, Glenn visited Gen twice a day every day during her 6-year convalescence at ManorCare Nursing Home. It was symbolic of his lifelong dedication to his one and only sweetheart. Glenn will be missed by his family and friends. His stories and storytelling will live on in their memories of him. Special thanks to the nurses and attendants of the Odd Fellow Home and New Perspectives Senior Living and Unity Hospice for their care and compassion and also to his Murphy Street neighbors for their many acts of kindness to him in his final years living there.
A memorial fund has been established in Glenn's name.
Visitation will be held at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave, Green Bay from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 28. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, corner of Ninth St. and 12th Ave., Green Bay. The Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev Donald Everts officiating. Burial will be at Fort Howard Memorial Park, next to Genevieve and his parents.
