    Hammill, Anita M. Anita M. Hammill, age 94, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Park View Health Care Center in Oshkosh. She was born on January 2, 1915, in Kaukauna; daughter of the late Theodore and Mary (McDaniel) Van Vreede. On October 16, 1937, Anita was married to John P. Hammill in Appleton; they celebrated 43 years of marriage and the births of 8 children. They made their home in Neenah until retirement when they moved to their cottage at Berry Lake where she enjoyed many happy times with friends and family. She was devoted to her family and in addition contributed to her community thought many organizations, including the Girl Scouts and a cook at St. Gabriel School. Anita also loved gardening, nature, cooking, sewing, quilting and traveling.
    Anita is survived by seven children: Joan Parker, Escondido, CA; John (Barbara) Hammill, Fort Meyers, FL; Jim Hammill, New London, WI; Sue (Finn) Thomsen, Chicago, IL; Kathy (Mike) Egan, Gillett, WI; Mary Host, Racine, WI; Mike (Carol) Hammill, Kingsford, MI; 14 grandchildren: Lori (Anthony) Bushem, Steven (Felicia) Parker, Lisa (Robert) Bencivenga, Gregg (Connie) Hammill, Cindy (George) Jackson, Greta (Mike) Madigan, Chris Gonzales, Aimee Hammill, Cybelle Egan, Tara Egan, Andy (Amanda) Host, Sarah Host, Alisha Hammill, Zak Hammill; 12 great-grandchildren: Jesse Parker, Taylor Bushem, Cody Parker, Talia Bencivenga, Vincent Bencivenga, Ashley Vlye, Samuel Hammill, Alec Jackson, Hannah Jackson, Anthony Host; sisters and brothers: Marion Hurley, Helen John, Phyllis Mauthe, Mark Van Vreede, Jim Van Vreede, Tom (Lori) Van Vreede; sister-in-law Myrt Van Vreede and dear best, friend Arry Van Lieshout.

    Anita's passing is a great loss to her family, relatives and many friends who will cherish her memory and sorely miss this kind and caring mother and friend.
    The Funeral Service for Anita will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 11:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Allen officiating. The visitation will be at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home on Monday, March 2, from 4 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Shawano .In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anita's memory to Park View Heath Center.

    Lucille Moser Kaukauna, age 89, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at St. Elizabeth. She was born November 25, 1917, to the late Theodore and Mary (McDaniel) Van Vreede in Freedom. After her mom's untimely and sudden death, Theodore married Katherine Dempsey who raised Lucille. She married Willard "Bill" P. Moser on December 28, 1940. He preceded her in death on September 25, 1991. Lucille grew up on the family farm in Freedom until she started her lifelong career of elementary teacher and homemaker (aka Super Mom). She worked for many years at St. John Grade School in Little Chute. Her love of reading was the foundation of her professional life, and that passion positively impacted her children. Lucille was a longtime member of St. John and St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a nature enthusiast, enjoying fishing and hiking at High Cliff. Lucille enjoyed knitting afghans, board games, cribbage and sheepshead, as well as family Sunday rides in the car that usually turned into sing-a- longs. In her later years, Lucille enjoyed the freedom that St. Paul Villa offered attending daily mass and rosary service.
    She is survived by her son, Bill (Linda Hermes) Moser and their son, William Hermes; three daughters: Elaine (Curtis) Nelson and her two children: Juliet (Bill) Gardner and Tim (Mary Jo) Bauer; Linda (Thomas Erickson) Moser; and Fay (Laszlo, "Les") Stumpf; her brothers and sisters: Anita Hammill, Marion Hurley, Helen John, Phyllis Mauthe, Jim Van Vreede, Mark Van Vreede, Tom (Lori) Van Vreede, Jerry (Myrt) Van Vreede and Mark Van Vreede.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Donna, brothers and sisters: Marguerite (Gordon) Lamers, John Hammill, Harold Hurley, Donald John, Larry Mauthe, Esther Van Vreede and Carol Van Vreede.
    The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2007, at ST. MARY of the ANNUNCIATION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 114 West Seventh Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Friends will be received on Friday, May 11, 2007, at the Boettcher Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Drive, Kaukauna, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday at Church, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial is being established in her name. Burial will take place on Monday in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom. The Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna, is assisting the family. 920-766-2099.

    Marion Hurley, 94, of Appleton, passed away at Prairie Homes on April 23, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.
    Marion was born on April 7, 1921, daughter of the late Theodore and Mary (McDaniel) VanVreede, and raised by Katherine (Dempsey) VanVreede, the woman she knew as her mother.
    Marion was happiest helping others, especially those less fortunate. She was a volunteer at the Salvation Army for 21 years, and a volunteer at Appleton Medical Center for 16 years. Marion was a longtime member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and volunteered bingo as well as preparing church bulletins. Marion also enjoyed sewing, gardening, and playing cards with her friends.
    Marion is survived by her children: Kay (Ken) Scheuer, Gary (Judy) Joosten, and Lynn (Larry) Fryfogle; son-in-law: Jere Gooding; brothers: Jim VanVreede, Mark VanVreede; and Tom (Lori) VanVreede; sisters: Helen John and Phyllis Mauthe; sister-in-law: Myrt VanVreede; 15 grandchilden; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Marion is further survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and other friends.
    She is preceded in death by: her parents; husband Jack Joosten; daughter: Jacqueline Gooding; brother: Jerome VanVreede; sisters: Marguerite (Gordon) Lamers, Anita (John) Hammil, and Lucille (Willard) Moser; and in-laws: Donald John, Larry Mauthe, Esther VanVreede, and Carol VanVreede.

    Loretta M. Schmalz, formerly of Riverside Drive in Kaukauna, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009, at the age of 98. Loretta was born August 26, 1910, in Freedom, daughter of the late Theodore and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits. On June 9, 1934, she married Leo H. Schmalz and the couple shared fifty-seven years together until his death on January 2, 1991. Loretta graduated from Kaukauna High School, and attended Outagamie County Normal School. She then taught all eight grades in a one room school located in rural Ashwaubenon for five years.
    Loretta had a great love of nature and grew a beautiful flower garden and dozens of violets, which she shared with her friends. She also loved to knit, sew and paint. Leo was active in the Elks, and Loretta was instrumental in forming the Elks' Ladies.
    Loretta is survived by a son, Lee (Joanne) Schmalz and their children: Charlie (Dana Rose) Schmalz, Susie (Paul) Weber and Mark (Meredith) Schmalz; and a daughter, Luann (Tom) Christian and their children: Julie Christian and Dan (Cori) Christian; two great-grandchildren: Shannon and Connor Schmalz. Loretta is also survived by a sister and three brothers: Dorothy Rebitz, Norval (Betty) Smits, Ken Smits, and Floyd Smits; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo, sisters: Angie (Bill) Brugman and Beatrice (Orville) Yingling; and brothers: Gerald (Eleanor) Smits and Theodore (Loyola) Smits.
    The funeral liturgy for Loretta will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009, at 5 p.m. at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating.     Beatrice Yingling, of Boulder Lake, WI, died Monday, December 8, 2008, at the home of her daughter in Green Bay. She was 92 years old. Born October 3, 1916, in Freedom, to Theodore and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits, she married Orville Yingling on September 30, 1961, in Kaukauna. He preceded her in death on May 5,2008.
    She attended St. Catherine Convent in Racine. She lived in Freedom and Kaukauna and worked for Wisconsin Telephone Company as an assignment clerk for 17 years prior to her marriage in 1961 when she moved to Appleton. Mrs. Yingling moved to Langlade in 1975. In 2008, she moved to Green Bay and lived at Woodside Oaks Apartments where she made many good friends. She was a member of St. James and Stanislaus Catholic Congregation in White Lake and Langlade and a member of the St. Zita Altar Society. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and baking cookies.

    Kenneth Smits, 86, passed away peacefully at The Heritage Hospice Residence in Appleton. Ken was born in Kaukauna, on Dec. 16, 1924, son of the late Theodore and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits. Ken graduated from Kaukauna High School and then attended the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. He also attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
    Ken was employed by Kimberly-Clark as an engineer for over 30 years. Ken served his country on two occasions, as a member of the Merchant Marines during World War II and later in the United States Army during the Korean War. Ken enjoyed golfing with his loving wife, Judy, wintering in Florida and attending anything that had to do with his grandchildren. He truly adored them.
    Ken is survived by two children, Kevin (Amy) Smits, Colorado; and Kerry (Matt) Lang, Darboy; six grandchildren, Delaney and Mac Kenzie Smits, and Kassandra, McDaniel, Erin and Collin Lang; his mother-in-law, Jennie Saler, Iron Mountain; two brothers, Norval (Betty) Smits, De Pere; and Floyd Smits, Kaukauna; a sister, Dorothy Rebitz, Kennesaw, Ga.; and two brothers-in-law, John Saler, Marinette; and Bob (Cheryl) Saler, Iron Mountain. Ken is further survived by several nieces and nephews; his favorite golfing buddy, Joe Leveque; and his dog, Libby.

    Floyd Anthony Smits, age 85, of Kaukauna, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Brewster Village. He was born in Kaukauna on June 25, 1930 to the late Theodore and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits.
    Floyd served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Salzburg, Austria. He loved to tell how The Sound of Music was being filmed there during that time. After his military service, Floyd attended Beauty School in Green Bay and later opened Floyd's House of Beauty in Kaukauna. Floyd enjoyed cooking, gardening, music, and visiting with people. He loved the time spent at his cottage in Door County.
    Floyd is survived by his sister Dorothy Rebitz and sister-in-law Elizabeth "Betty" Smits; he is further survived by several nieces, nephews, patrons, and close friends.     Obituary:
    Gordon Robert Meulemans, 91 years, of Combined Locks passed away July 28, 2016 at ThedaCare Hospice Center. He was born on June 20, 1925 in Wrightstown. Gordon grew up on a farm near Wrightstown losing his parents at a young age, then living with relatives and his uncle Charles Meulemans through High School. Gordon joined the Navy after graduation from Little Chute High School in 1943. Serving as a radioman 2nd class he was on the destroyer picket line at Okinawa where he experienced kamikaze attacks. He was also in the battle of the Philippine Sea at Leyte Gulf and near the USS Franklin's fight in the Sea of Japan. In his eighties he attended the Navy's Atlantic fleet conference with his son at Newport News, VA. He served both in WWII and Korea and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2778 in Appleton.
    He retired from Land O Lakes as an area supervisor in the LP gas division. By the mid 1960's his cars were modified running on both gasoline and propane gas. He enjoyed the many people he worked with both in Wisconsin and Minnesota and continued to visit many of them long after he retired.
    Gordon and Priscilla wintered for 28 years at the La Fuente in Yuma, Arizona, making many close friends who stayed in touch over the years. They enjoyed the dinner get togethers and "social hours" and each season looked forward to renewing friendships at their "home away from home". Gordon drove there until he was 89. This April he returned from Yuma and at 90 flew on his own.
    His greatest joy was the time he spent with his grandsons Matthew and Graham. Both have many cherished memories of the time spent with them.
    He is survived by his son Keith (Susan) Meulemans of Green Bay, two grandsons Matthew of Nashville, Tennessee, Graham (Bobbi) of Minneapolis, Minnesota and sister Isabel Sheleski of Appleton, Wisconsin. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Evarist and Rose Meulemans, his wife of 68 years Priscilla (in January) and his brothers Joseph and Bernard "Buddy".
    A Funeral Service for Gordon will be held on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 11 am at Jansen-Fargo Funeral Home, 204 Kimberly Ave., Kimberly. Private inurnment at a later date. Family and friends may visit from 9 am until time of Service.
    Gordon's family wants to specifically thank the families of Jerry and Rosemary Kamps, Therea Lamers, Don Reitzner and a very special thanks to his niece Linda Reitzner for all their care and help. The family of Gordon Meulemans wants to recognize the ThedaCare Hospice Residence at Heritage Manor. It was only nine days, but it was nine days of world class care.
