    Biography:
HERMAN A. KAMPS, president of the jewelry firm of H. A. Kamps Company, Incorporated, has been a well-known figure in the jewelry trade of this section for a number of years. He was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, March 8, 1865, a son of Gerhard and Katherine (Jansen) Kamps, who were born near the Rhine, Germany. They came to the United States during the '50s and located in Appleton about 1861, where Mr. Kamps engaged in the harness business until a few years prior to his death. He was a well-known and highly esteemed business citizen, and retired in comfortable circumstances. His death occurred September 14, 1893, and that of Katherine (Jansen) Kamps, April 20, 1873. They had a family of five children and Mr. Kamnps also had five children by a second marriage. Herman A. Kamps attended the public and high schools of Appleton, as well as the parochial school, and his first experience in the jewelry business was as clerk with L. M. Follett, in whose employ he continued two years. He then took a business course, and during the following nine years was employed by Max Mayer, at Appleton. For several years thereafter he was employed in different jewelry estabishments in this city, and at Milwaukee, but eventually returned to Mr. Mayer's employ, and at the time of the latter's death, in 1892, he bought a half interest in the business, the firm name becoming Mayer & Kamps. This connection continued for several years, when Mr. Kamps bought out the Mayer interest and formed the firm of H. A. Kamps Company, Incorporated, with himself as president and treasurer, M. C. Kamps as vice-president, and J. H. Bedessem as secretary. This business was established in 1880 in Appleton by Max Mayer, and is one of the old and reliable firms of the city. Under Mr. Kamps' management the business has increased steadily and now takes front rank with other Appleton jewelry houses. Kamps and his family are members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and he holds membership in the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Catholic Knights and St. Joseph's Society. On June 10, 1890, Mr. Kamps was married to Mary C. Bedessem, daughter of M. and Barbara (Bain) Bedessem, and they have had five children, namely: Barbara, Celia, Harold, Ralph and Laurine.

    Biography:
Iwo Jima Flag Raiser. During the Battle for Iwo Jima he was a US Navy Corpsman (Pharmacist's Mate Second Class) assigned to E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division, and one of six men who were immortalized in Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal's photo of the US Flag raising on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, just after noon on February 23, 1945, for which Rosenthal was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The six men were Corporal Harlon Block, Private Rene Gagnon, Private Ira Hayes, Private Franklin Sousley, Sergeant Mike Strank, and US Navy Corpsman John Bradley. Author James Bradley described his life's story in the bestseller, "Flags of Our Fathers" (2000). The flag in the famous photo is the second US flag raised over Mount Suribachi; the first flag was raised there at 10:20 am by Sergeant Henry Hansen, Platoon Sergeant Eugene Thomas, Corpsman John Bradley, Private Philip Ward, Private James Michels and Corporal Chuck Lindberg, and photographed by Sergeant Lou Lowery. Corpsman John Bradley is the only one in both flag raising photos. Born in Antigo, Wisconsin, the son of James J. and Kathryn Bradley, he moved with his family to Appleton, Wisconsin where he grew up. His father worked as a railroad engineer. In 1942, as World War II raged, 19 year old Jack enlisted into the US Navy, to become a medical technician, happy to have what he thought would be a non-combat job. Following training, he was assigned to the Navy Medical Hospital in San Francisco. In January 1944, he was sent to the Marine Corps Field Medical School to become a corpsman. After completing the school, he was assigned to the 5th Marine Division, then forming up at Camp Pendleton, California, and slated for the upcoming invasion of Iwo Jima. The Invasion of 70,000 marines landed on February 19, 1945, on the south side of the island, with Bradley landing at Green Beach, closest to Mount Suribachi. On the second day of the invasion, Bradley was pinned down with his unit under heavy enemy fire when an unidentified marine was cut down by crisscrossing Japanese machine guns and mortar fire. Braving the intense enemy fire, Bradley ran thirty yards over exposed bare ground to reach the downed marine, inserting plasma to save his life, then covered the wounded marine with his own body to protect him from fire while the plasma dripped into the downed marine. When the plasma bottle finally emptied, Bradley then carried the wounded marine back to safety, an action for which he was later presented the Navy Cross (second highest award for valor). On the fourth day of the invasion, the Marines captured Mount Suribachi and raised the American flag. Following the capture of Mount Suribachi, the 28th Regiment was redeployed to continue the attack along west coast of the island. Bradley was hit by Japanese shell fire on March 12, while aiding other wounded Marines. Ignoring his own wounds, he helped another wounded marine to the aid station, where doctors there noticed his own severely damaged legs. Despite his protests to remain with his unit, Bradley was immediately air evacuated to Guam and then to Hawaii; his war was over. Upon his return to the US at the end of the war, Bradley left the military to return to Antigo, where he married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Van Grop, and became a funeral director. He and Betty would have eight children. He refused to discuss the war, and refused to participate in the fame that would be directed to the Flag Raisers. Whenever told he was a war hero, he would always tell his praisers that the real heroes were the men who didn't come back. His family only learned of his Navy Cross and Purple Heart medals, and the details of his role in the raising of the flag after his death. In one of his very few comments about the flag raising, he stated: "It took everyone on that island and the men on the ships offshore to get the flag up on Suribachi." Obituary:
Peter T. McKenzie, 51, died of a heart attack on March 2, 2016 at his home at Oneida Heights in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Peter was born on June 18, 1964. He was the fourth of Thomas and Mary "Rusty" McKenzie's five children. A strong, bright and happy child, Peter loved the outdoors and activities like skiing and hunting. When he was 13 mental illness set in, and it became a challenge that would define the rest of his life. In recent years, with advances in medicine and his practice of yoga, he became well enough to avoid psychiatric hospitalization.
Whenever he could, he turned his own trials into ways to help others. He says it the best in his It's Your Call piece that ran in this paper in July 2013; "I believe that God believed in me enough to challenge me to be a better, stronger person than I would have been without these challenges. Now I can be of use to others who have disabilities." Peter became known by family, friends and those he met across Appleton as a generous and gentle giant. He'd share jokes and advise on how to relieve stress, and if someone needed it he would hand them a small pamphlet listing the social services available in Outagamie County with phone numbers.
He tried to be charitable and kind to everyone he met regardless of their background or circumstances. Again, a letter of his that ran in the Post Crescent reads, "the cheapest green, reusable, renewable medicine is a kind word and a smile … Humor works, too. It works heath care wonders." Peter will be remembered for lifting the spirits of those around him, even when his own days were difficult.
Peter is survived by his parents Thomas and Rusty McKenzie and siblings Jane McKenzie, Katie (Guglielmo Sala) McKenzie and Thomas (Jill Newman) McKenzie. He is preceded in death by his sister Molly McKenzie. He is also survived by his ex-wife Tracie Anania and her son Steven (Bonnie) Proszenyak.
The funeral liturgy for Peter will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 11:00 AM at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence St., with Fr. Jim Leary O.F.M. Cap officiating. A time of visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Peter's name to the charity of your choice . To submit online condolences and find more information visit: www.wichmannfargo.com.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Drs. Thomas Tatlock, Randy Kerswill and Charles McKee and all of the other health care providers, mental health specialists and social workers who provided compassionate and high quality care for Peter. And special thanks to Sister Anne, Jim Stack, Tim Spalding and others for being close and supportive friends.

    Obituary:
Asman, Patricia M. - God peacefully took our Wife, Mother, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Niece, Godmother, Friend, Patty Duke and Rockstar to be a special angel on the morning of March 1, 2017.
We know why she was put on this earth. Considering the 34 years she protected children in the Village of Kimberly as a crossing guard, the thousands of trips to the nursing home to care for her parents, Bernard and Audrey Vanden Boogaard, being a guardian for her younger brother Bob after their parent's death, on top of raising a family and being a wonderful wife, it is clear that she was placed here to guard and care for us. But that was nothing yet.
Even after being given a tough diagnosis of leukemia and fighting it with all the side effects that 27 chemotherapy sessions over the next five and a half years would bring her, she continued to take care of people. She attended more of her grandkids games than seemed reasonably possible, made hundreds of frosted and sugared cut-out cookies every year, and lightened the day of the nurses who took care of her.
When she had time to take care of herself she loved to hold and go to rummage sales, have 'learning sessions' with her breakfast group, and take out other friends at lunch. She loved going to country music concerts, traveling anywhere anyone would take her, and watching TV and keeping track of the celebrities, especially Nashville series and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society chairperson, Charles Esten.
We will fondly remember her determination, persistence, pride, humor, spoiling, 'opera' singing, Culvers, tacos, and Tootsie Pops.
While she only was on this earth 67 years, we should not feel that she did not live a full life. In fact, she probably lived more than most, and we believe that is shown by the number of people she impacted and share our love for her. Regrettably, we couldn't possibly list them all, but you know who you are.
She is loved by her husband of 46 years, Tom, her son Jeff and Kelli Rindt, and her son Randy and Anne and her grandkids Grant (Buddy), Michael (The Man) and Claudia (Sweetie Pie). She is loved by her brothers and sisters: Mary and Lenny Milton, Kim and Laurie Vanden Boogaard, and Bob Vanden Boogaard and sister-in-law Sherree (Jim), and their children.
She is too loved by Tom's brothers and sisters: Dave and Maria Asman, Mary and Steve Arend, and Russ and Lynne Asman and their children.
She has joined her parents, her brother Jim, and brother Garry and sister-in-law Jackie, and Tom's parents Roy and Effie, in heaven.
We know we are not alone in our love for her. We invite all those who knew her to celebrate her life on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Jansen Fargo Funeral Home, 204 E. Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 620 E. Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly on Saturday, March 4 from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM.
We know that words are difficult. Please bring a photo or a written thought of Pat to help us preserve her memory.
