    Obituary:
    Jerome P. "Jerry" Coenen, Little Chute, age 92, peacefully went to his eternal reward June 28, 2015 at St. Paul Elder Care with his family at his side. He was born in DePere on November 28, 1922 to the late Henry and Mary (VandeWettering) Coenen. Upon graduating from East DePere High School, Jerry enlisted in the Navy. During WW II he worked in communications as a radio man on various vessels, including destroyers, destroyer escorts, and submarines.
    Jerry married Eunice Coppus on his 24th birthday November 28, 1946 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church.
    October, 1952, marked the beginning of Jerry's Thilmany career. He began in maintenance as a construction laborer. Jerry served a mason apprenticeship and was certified as an I/C Mason in August 1959, the position he held at his retirement.
    In 1977, he became a member of the Quarter Century Club and received his 30 year award in 1982. Jerry was a member of Local 147.
    Jerry is survived by his daughters: Jane (Darrell) Pahl and Judy (Gary) Pahl, all of Greenleaf: grandchildren: Jim (Diana) Pahl, Leanne (Bob) Jakab, and Greg (Emily) Pahl; great grandchildren: Mackenzie, Isabella and Owen Pahl, Amanda and Lauren Jakab, and Owen Johnson; siblings: Harry Coenen and Betty Rentmeester; and sister-in-law Dorothy Coppus. He is furthers survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Eunice; brother: Clarence (Rita) Coenen; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Nancy Coenen, Francis Rentmeester, Margaret (Marvin) Rolf, Bernard and Charles (Betty) Coppus.
    Visitation will be held Thursday July 2, 2015 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St., Little Chute) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Ronald Belitz will officiate. Military rites conducted by the Jacob Coppus American Legon Post 258 will immediately follow. Committal St. John Cemetery.     Elizabeth "Betty" Rentmeester, 87, Longtime Allouez resident, died peacefully, Monday, July 18, 2016, at Allouez Parkside Village. She was born February 1, 1929, in the Town of Rockland, to the late Henry and Mary (Vande Wettering) Coenen. Betty attended East De Pere High School graduating in 1947 and then received her CNA Diploma in Florida where she worked in numerous nursing homes. She married Francis Rentmeester on September 2, 1948, at St Mary's Catholic Church in De Pere. He preceded her in death on August 5, 2011. Betty took great pride in raising her family and made sure all the holidays were special. She and Francis started traveling back and forth from Green Bay to Sarasota, Florida in 1970. She was a longtime member of St. Mary of the Angels and St. Martha's Parish in Sarasota. Since her move to Parkside Village, almost five years ago, she has enjoyed many friendships with the residents as well as the staff. Betty looked forward to the activities and especially enjoyed playing Bingo. She always enjoyed engaging in conversation and maintained her wit until her last days.

    Obituary:
    Harold "Harry" Coenen, age 81, of Appleton, passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. Harry was born on June 24, 1936, in Green Bay to the late Henry and Mary (Vande Wettering) Coenen. He married Nancy C. Gerhartz on May 30, 1958, in Kaukauna; she preceded him in death on February 3, 2015. Following his graduation from East DePere High School he attended Green Bay Technical Barber College. He purchased his first barber shop in 1967 in Appleton and became well-known throughout the community for his skills and excellent service. During his over six decade career at the barber shop, Harry was also very involved in youth sports in the Valley. He was a WIAA official for football, basketball, baseball and softball; he was a commissioner and coach in Appleton Little League baseball; was a Babe Ruth League coach; and coached basketball for the Pius X Catholic Church grade school. Harry was also long-time season ticket holder for the Green Bay Packers. Harry was also a long-time member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and an active volunteer in many church programs.
    Harry and Nancy were blessed with four sons, Jeffrey (Kathy) Coenen, Pickerel, Wisconsin; Scott (Val) Coenen, Combined Locks; and Kevin (Aleshia) Coenen, Pleasanton, California, survive. His son, Greg, preceded him in death in 1998. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Jason Coenen; Bryant (Beth) Gasper; Steven (Sarah) Gasper; Kelly (Brad) Uecker; Amy (Stephen) DeWitt; Nicole (Gabriel) Brickler, Korina (Jared) Heuvel; Jordan Coenen; Kevin Wade; Moniay (Linda) Wade; Stokley Chassee; and Brittany Coenen; his great grandchildren, Vanessa Gasper; Samuel, Shawn, Seth and Scarlett Gasper; Hailey and Morgan Uecker, Gregory DeWitt; Lexus Brickler; Rhian, Ryder, Jax and Keegan Huevel; Keegan Thiel; Kayden Wade and Korina Wade; and his sister-in-law, Mary (Jim) Nussbaum. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Appleton.     Alice M. Hutjens, 91, De Pere, passed away Thursday afternoon, January 19, 2012. Alice was the daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Coenen) Janssen, born September 2, 1920, De Pere. She married her late husband Joe Hutjens on August 27, 1942 at St. Mary Catholic Church, De Pere.
    Alice was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church and an usher for many years. She worked on the family farm with her husband Joe. Alice loved to bowl, listen to country music, and play her guitar. She also loved having parties for her family and friends.

    Josephine C. (Janssen) Gossen, 89, Green Bay, formerly of De Pere, passed away peacefully, Friday, April 1, 2011, surrounded by her family, who were her greatest joy in life. Daughter to the late William and Gertrude (Coenen) Janssen was born Nov. 13, 1921, in the Town of Rockland. She was an active member of St. Willebrord Catholic Church, where she was active in the Sanctuary Society, was a member of the Hospitality Committee, served as Eucharistic Minister and assisted wherever there was a need.
    Josephine volunteered at the Salvation Army and was Vice-President of the Single's Club. She loved to dance and was a member of the Whirl-O-Way Square Dance Club. She also enjoyed bowling and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Josephine loved to walk and made sure she did so every day. Many people will remember her by her smile.

    Kempen, Marvin P. 315 Knoedler Street KimberlyAge 77, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Hospit al in Appleton. He was born August 11, 1925 in the town of Buchanan, s on of Peter and Marie (Coenen) Kempen. He served in the US Marine Corps f or 2 1/2 years during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a Corp oral. On May 14, 1949, he married the former Lucille Kemps in Kimberly; s he survives. Marv spent six years working in paper mills and then operat ed a poultry farm in Askeaton for over forty years. Marv sold Pioneer See ds for thirty-eight years and Shaklee Products for many years. In 1993, t he couple retired and moved to Kimberly.Marv's commitment to his Lord had a profound impact on his life and the li fe of his family. In 1967 he attended a Cursillo which changed his lif e. He and Lucille have been involved with charismatic activities, Engag ed Encounter, and worked with various TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) program s. After he retired to Kimberly, he joined the parish choir, became involv ed in RCIA, became a communion distributor, served on the parish worship c ommittee and the Diocesan Pastoral Council. He was a member of the Urban K lister American Legion Post #436 for over fifty years, was a 3rd degree Kn ight of Columbus, and was also involved in 4-H.     World War II remembrance: He was assigned to the Armed Guard which was Na vy personnel that manned large guns on merchant ships. Merchant ships carr ied supplies to the fighting areas. After 10 weeks of gunnery trainin g, we sailed from New Orleans, not knowing where we were headed becau se of the security. It took 33 days to get to the Philippines and during o ur trip we went through a typhoon that could have sunk us, since many of t his type of ship cracked under stress, but we did make it to Manila. Wh en we got to Manila Bay, I just couldn't believe all the sunken ships in t he harbor. The most beautiful city in the South Pacific was totally destro yed. I spent most of my two years in the Philippines. I never was wounded.

    Obituary:
    Boniface J. Kempen, "Bonny", a long time resident of Hollandtown prayed and confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior on June 18, 2014. He went home to be with his Savior on June 23, 2014. He was born November 6, 1926 in the Town of Buchanan, son of the late Peter and Marie (Coenen) Kempen. On September 2, 1950 he was united in marriage to Ann Vander Zanden in Darboy. Bonny attended Military Junction one room schoolhouse and graduated from Kaukauna High School, class of 1944. He entered the U.S. Navy, serving for two years in the Pacific theater and was honorably discharged in 1946. Bonny was a longstanding member of the Wrightstown American Legion, Urban Klister Post #436. He was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Hollandtown, where he was a member of the mixed choir and men's choir. Bonny also enjoyed coaching basketball and baseball for the Hollandtown Raiders. For 63 years he sold Watkin's Quality Products and was known as "The Watkin's Man". Bonny was also an avid golfer, bowler, Packer, Brewer and Bucks fan.
    He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann; his five children: Carol (Alan) Tuttoilmondo, Diane Kempen, Jim (Brenda) Kempen, Becky (Ivan) Mesa, and Elaine (Roberto) Rodriguez; daughter-in-law, Sue Kempen; 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters: Lorna Van Handel, Arlene (Roger) Bruecker, Jan (Erv) Nettekoven, and Laverne (Dave) Weigert; 2 brothers: Hal Kempen and Gerry (Geri) Kempen.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jack, 3 brothers: Marvin, Paul, and Dick Kempen, and other in-laws.
    A Celebration of Bonny's life will be held at Noon on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at St. Katharine Drexel Parish at St. Francis Church, Hollandtown with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Friends may call at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.     John "Jack" Kempen, Tampa, Fla., 47, Business Manager at Florida College in Temple Terrace, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 3, at a Tampa Hospital from a heart attack. He was a native of Kaukauna and moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1976, when he married Sue Thomas on June 12. In 1993, Jack and Sue moved to Tampa. Mr. Kempen was a Certified Public Accountant, a member of the Fortieth Street Church of Christ, the Kiwanis Club and was a veteran of the United States Navy.
    Jack is survived by his wife, Sue two sons, Drew Kempen, Lawrenceville, Ga. and Brian Kempen, Tampa his parents, Boniface and Ann (VanderZanden) Kempen, Kaukauna one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Brenda Kempen, Malone four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Carol and Alan Tuttoilmondo, Minneapolis Diane Kempen, Mount Horeb Becky and Ivan Mesa and Elaine and Shawn Schaumann, Miramar, Fla.

    Obituary:
    Tom F. Hutjens, 35, De Pere, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at a local hospital after an eleven year battle with Muscular Dystrophy. He was born August 31, 1977 to Louie and Patti (Gossen) Hutjens.
    Tom bravely faced the challenges of each and every day. He was honored to have worked as herd manager for Dave and Jerry Stencil at Stencil Farms. They allowed him to work until he decided he could no longer do the job. We are forever grateful to their families.
    Tom looked forward to and made every effort to attend Saturday night mass and then would go out to eat with family and friends. Uncle Bill made him laugh with his stories.
    Tom is survived by his parents, Louie and Patti Hutjens; his brothers: Eric (Chris) Hutjens; Kevin (Rebecca) Hutjens, maternal grandmother Catherine Gossen; uncles and aunts: Jim and Patty Gossen, Denis and Kay Gossen, Anne and Hardy Brooks, Al and Diane Gossen, Lee and Brenda Gossen, Carol and Bob Muehrcke, Bill Hutjens, Sally and Lee Mancoske, and Sandy and Dave Heezen. Tom loved spending time with his nieces and nephews: Alex and Ryan Hutjens; Hannah, Connor and Kassidy Hutjens. They brought joy and excitement to Tom's simple life. Further survived by special friends: Larry and Arlene Pennings, Dennis and Linda Pennings, and; cousins, neighbors and friends.
    Tom is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Alice (Janssen) Hutjens; maternal grandfather, Francis J Gossen; Uncle Tommy Hutjens.
    Family and friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, 4805 Sportmans Drive, Ledgeview, on Friday, September 28, 2012 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, at church with the Rev. A time of visitation and support will be held on Friday at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and again on Saturday morning from 8:30 am until the time of service.     Michael Ederer, Kaukauna, 19, passed away Thursday August 20, 2009, at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, after a long, courageous battle with childhood cancer.
    He was born in Appleton on September 11, 1989, to Terry and Chris (Bruecker) Ederer.
    Michael was a graduate of Kaukauna High School, where he participated in football and track.
    He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
    Michael also enjoyed playing video games and watching Packers and Brewers games with his friends.
    Michael is survived by his parents, Terry and Chris Ederer, Kaukauna; sisters, Justine and Kasey, both at home; grandparents: Jerry (Carol) Ederer, Kaukauna and Roger (Arlene) Bruecker, Greenleaf; and aunts and uncles: Barb (Bruce) Lamers, Ken (special friend Dawn) and Todd (Lisa) Ederer, Linda (Jim) Krautkramer, Rick (Sandy) Bruecker, Pat (Katrina) Bruecker, Mike (Jenni) Bruecker, and Marty (Shelly) Bruecker. He is further survived by many cousins, many friends and his dog, Copper.

    Mourning for her son has a Kaukauna mom on a mission to beat childhood cancer

    There are plenty of times when Chris Ederer cries.
    She quietly weeps for her son, Michael, who died of cancer a month ago today at age 19. But for the sake of her family and her own mental health, she keeps busy. She has to.
    "Your kids and your family are only as strong as you are," the Town of Kaukauna woman said. "That's my job."
    It hasn't gone unnoticed by her husband, Terry, daughters Kasey, 16, and Justine, 19, family and friends."She's just been phenomenal through the whole thing for her family and for everybody around her," said family friend Bruce Van Boxtel, whose son Rich, 20, was a pallbearer at Michael's funeral.
    In remembrance of Michael and to raise awareness, the Ederers are spreading the word about childhood cancer one gold ribbon at a time. Chris in particular is on a one-woman mission to raise the profile of childhood cancer - the need for research and the need to love and pray for those children going through the same hellish journey her child endured these past three-plus years.
    "People need to realize what these kids go through," Chris said. "I can't get Michael back, but I'm going to do all I can to spread the word. We need to find a cure."
    Her car, adorned with a paint job and stickers commemorating area children being treated for cancer, is a moving billboard of sorts, giving all who come upon it a reason to pause.
    Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and age 15, according to the National Cancer Institute, whose 2008 budget was $4.83 billion. Of that, breast cancer received roughly 12 percent, prostate cancer roughly 6 percent, and childhood cancers roughly 4 percent, according to reports at fundedresearch.cancer.gov.
    "There needs to be continued research, even though we've made such progress in the last 40 years in increasing cure rates in childhood cancers and decreasing side effects and long-term effects from treatment," said Terri Lewis, a nurse with the Prevea Health Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, where Michael was treated.The Ederers' crusade, Chris said, is to make the gold ribbon of childhood cancer as well known as the pink ribbon, the international symbol for breast cancer awareness.
    "I'm not knocking pink ribbons. My mom and my mother-in-law are both breast cancer survivors," she said. "But the kids need a little more acknowledgement now."
    Van Boxtel credits Chris Ederer for not only raising awareness about childhood cancer, but also "helping people that don't even have cancer be more aware of it, and try to prevent it and go in and get checked."
    Michael's story
    Much has been written about Michael Ederer, a 6-foot football player and track hurdler at Kaukauna High School who was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma his junior year.
    But his story started two years earlier in December 2005 when he went to the doctor with a pain in his side.
    "The doctor pushed on it and thought (Michael had) pulled a muscle," Chris said. "Physical therapy was prescribed."
    "Physical therapy" is a phrase Chris still hates to hear.
    "What I know now, I would have demanded (an x-ray)," she said of her son's initial diagnosis. "There's something hurting him. …Confirm it."
    A year to the date later, Michael's pain was so bad he was losing sleep at night. He again went to the doctor, and this time an X-ray was performed and showed small, stringy objects hanging down from his rib. A biopsy was sent to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Two weeks later came the diagnosis of cancer.
    Ewing's sarcoma is a rare bone cancer that affects only 150 to 200 cases a year in the United States.
    "It's rare, but once it hits your kid it's not so rare anymore," Chris said. "It's your life."
    The cancer was in his ribs and had already spread to Michael's lungs. He had a 10 percent survival rate.
    Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery had Michael and his family hopeful he had beat the disease. But the week of his high school graduation in 2008, it returned. And the grueling process began again, but it never changed Michael's disposition.
    "He was always a happy go-lucky kid," Chris said. "Even when he was not feeling good or things weren't looking good, he always looked back to Kevin Sharp, a country singer he'd met a couple times, who is a Ewing's sarcoma survivor now of probably 15 or 16 years. … (Michael) would still always say, 'I'm not giving up. They told Kevin Sharp he wasn't going to make it.'"
    Though Michael never mentioned dying with his family, he did to his friends.
    "He was worried about the girls (sisters Kasey and Justine) being taken care of and dad having a hunting buddy," Chris said.
    Early in the week Michael died the doctor told the family nothing more could be done.
    "So even though he battled almost three years, it went fast," Chris said of her son's death Aug. 20. "I wouldn't of thought he'd be gone now. I thought we'd get one more Christmas at least. I still can't believe he's gone."
    A mother's mission
    In the Ederer family's front yard in the Town of Kaukauna sits a large cutout of a gold ribbon Chris designed. There also are dangling gold stars blowing in the breeze, hung before her son's death. They represent the children undergoing cancer treatments at the St. Vincent Hospital Regional Pediatric Center, which works in concert with the Prevea Health Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic in Green Bay. The number 50 has been crossed out and replaced with 49.
    Chris sent e-mails to corporations such as Toys 'R Us, Grayco, Crayola, Hershey's, Precious Moments and Kimberly-Clark asking for their support. She's e-mailed Oprah and Dr. Phil, Ellen DeGeneres and Bonnie Hunt, to no avail.
    "I can't help but feel unless we get someone to back us, like Deanna Favre (did) with breast cancer or Michael J. Fox with Parkinson's (disease), we will never get enough funding," she said. "It is the most underfunded research there is. We just need more. … Something needs to be done about it."
    Piles of black T-shirts created by Eagle Graphics in Kaukauna lay on a table in the family's garage with the same gold ribbon and slogan, "Spreading the word one gold ribbon at a time." The shirts were Chris' idea, and they're offered for a minimal fee to families on Caring Bridge, a nonprofit Web service connecting families and friends of those enduring a critical illness, treatment or recovery. It's on her to-do list to get the shirts in the mail.
    Parked in the garage is her red Chevy Impala. From behind it looks like any other car. But from the front it is a conversation starter. Painted in black, the hood is emblazoned with tiny gold ribbons and the names of those the Ederer family met or have gotten to know through Caring Bridge who've either beaten cancer, are undergoing treatment or who've lost the battle. If a child dies, a small, white angel is added.
    In the fall sunlight, the car sparkles.
    "I think it's very special what Chris is doing," said family friend Terry Gussert of Wrightstown, a body shop technician who helped with the car conversion. "She's dedicated and committed to finding a cure and promoting the awareness of childhood cancer."
    Never forgotten
    On Sept. 4, the Kaukauna School District and community paid tribute to Michael at Kaukauna High School's football game against Appleton East. His No. 81 jersey was officially retired before the game, followed by a moment of silence.
    Prior to the freshman football game against Neenah Sept. 10, the teams lined up across from each other on their respective 45-yard lines. The captains met at mid-field. The Neenah players had heard Michael's story, took up a collection among the team and presented a donation. In Michael's honor, they would not wear No. 81 for the game.
    And the Kaukauna girls volleyball team is wearing gold shoelaces in recognition of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Michael's sister, Kasey, is on the junior varsity team.
    About a dozen of Michael's friends showed up at the Ederers' house Sept. 11. Michael would have turned 20. They released balloons in his honor.
    "Even those big, sturdy football players stood and watched (the balloons) until you couldn't see them anymore," Chris said. " Then they came in, sat down and played video games just like (Michael) was still here until 12:30 or 1 in the morning."
    For just a moment, the Ederers' world again felt normal.

    September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Here are some facts:
    # Of the 12 most common forms of childhood cancers, leukemias and cancers of the brain and central nervous system account for more than half of new cases.
    # About one-third of childhood cancers are leukemias, the most of which in children is acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The most common solid tumors are brain tumors, with other solid tumors being less common.
    # In the United States in 2007, approximately 10,400 children under age 15 were diagnosed with cancer and about 1,545 children will die from the disease. Although this makes cancer the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children ages 1 to 14, cancer is still relatively rare in this age group.
