FRAMES FOR THE FUTURE Iron River area centennial book page 396 "Thomas Flanagan Family"
Iron River's first school master was Thomas Flanagan. He was born in Freedom, Wisconsin near Appleton on March 20, 1858. Tom's parents were John and Margaret (Cleary) Flanagan who were natives of County Westmeath, Ireland.
Mr. Flanagan was married to Mary Hayes and came to Iron River in 1881 when it was a small mining hamlet and resided here continually until his death in 1928 at age 70.
Tom accepted a position as school master in the fall of 1881 and continued in that work the following year. He received his education at Lawrence College in Appleton. Mr. Flanagan received his teacher's permit by passing an examination in Marquette, which at that time was the county seat of this district, also a part of Marquette County.
The school in which Mr. Flanagan taught was a log building next to what is now Selin's Furniture Store on Genesse Street at Fourth. Many of Iron River's prominent citizens attended school under his instruction.
In 1882 Mr. Flanagan was honored by being made first clerk of the newly organized Iron River Township. After completing 11 years as township clerk he was elected treasurer, a position he held for two years. He was then elected township supervisor, a position he held for three years. Later, when Iron River became incorporated as a village, Mr. Flanagan was appointed police marshall.
Tom and Mary were the parents of seven children: Edward, Clement, Lillian, Eulalia, Clarence, Chester and Margaret.
Clement, Lillian, Eulalia and Margaret were all educators. Margaret, or "Nad" as she was known, served as principal of the James and Lincoln schools. Clarence was a medical doctor and practiced in Menominee for many years. Eulalia was married to L.C. (Sharkey) Brazell of Iron River and Lillian to Mike Schroeder of Vulcan.
Tom and Mary had 13 grandchildren, two of whom, Mrs. Carl W. Anderson (Peggy Flanagan) and Chester H. Flanagan, live in Iron River. Chester married Judith Nolingberg of Iron River and Clement married Ethel Bagley of Gaastra.

David J. Flanagan Jr., age 88, Bear Creek, WI died on Monday, August 20, 2012, at New London Family Medical Center, New London. David was born in Bear Creek WI, on January 20, 1924, son of the late David and Marie (Anthony) Flanagan.
Dave graduated from Bear Creek High School followed by Lawrence Collage, Appleton WI, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. While attending Lawrence he was called into U.S. Army during WWII where he served in France, Austria, Belgium, and Germany until the time when Germany surrendered. He was then transferred to the Pacific Theater where he served in the Philippines.
After returning home in 1946 he succeeded his father as President of the family sauerkraut business, Flanagan Bros. Inc. which then became Great Lakes Kraut Co. and is now known as GLK Foods.
Dave married Geraldine McPeak of New London on November 13 1947, and they had one son David Daniel.
Dave served on the Bank Boards of Clintonville National Bank, New London First State Bank, and First National of Appleton, he also served on the New London Community Hospital Board and the Village Board of Bear Creek.
He was a member of the New London Golf Club, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Parish, The Elks Club, and a member of Vilas County Improvement Co.
Dave is survived by his son David D. and his wife Julie (Weisgerber) Flanagan and their son Beau Daniel. Nieces and Nephews: Ryan Downs, Paul Downs, Wendy Johnson, and Stephanie Downs. Sister in-laws, Pat Moriarty and Pat McPeak and brother in-laws, George Motto and Terry McPeak and his wife Ruthann.
Preceding Dave in death was his loving wife of 58 year Geraldine in 2005.
Also preceding Dave in death were his sister Marie Downs and her husband Paul. Sister in-laws: Dawn Peterson, Sally Jensen, Vivian Motto, DeDe Raschke, and Sharon Petersen, brother in-laws, Ercel McPeak, Mike McPeak, Bob Petersen, Pete Jensen, Dr. Ted Raschke.
Funeral Mass for David will be held on Friday, August 24, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bear Creek. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Parish cemetery.

Obituary:
Edward E. Flanagan, age 88, of Bear Creek, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at St. Joseph Residence in New London. Ed was born on June 7, 1920, in Bear Creek, son of the late James and Helen (Huhn) Flanagan. On July 6, 1944, he married Delores Brault. She preceded him in death in 1992. Ed lived and farmed in the Bear Creek area his entire life. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bear Creek. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a longtime member of the Bear Creek School Board. Ed was an avid sportsmen; he loved to hunt and fish. In his youth he played baseball for the Appleton Foxes and the New London Merchants. Ed enjoyed spending time at his cottage on Pelican Lake and participating in the Wednesday night golf league.
He is survived by his children: Kathleen (Bill) Klegin, New London; Michael (Nancy) Flanagan, Weyauwega; Patricia (Michael) Balke, Oshkosh; Edward (Linda) Flanagan, Mabelvale, AR; Kevin (Jane) Flanagan, Stevens Point; Maureen (Wayne) Bicknase, Tucson, AZ; Hugh (Sherri) Flanagan, Bear Creek; William (Tracy) Flanagan, Bear Creek; 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Paul (Mary) Flanagan, Bear Creek; sister, Helen Mares, Appleton. Ed is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, and also a grandson, Andrew Heling.
The Funeral Mass for Ed will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bear Creek. Friends may call at the Cline & Hanson Funeral Home on Friday, June 5, 2009, from 4-7 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the mass. A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Sister Sandy Peterson Prayer Garden at St. Mary's in Bear Creek.
