Leo J. Griesbach, age 89, of Appleton, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Leo was born on August 18, 1919, in Appleton, to the late Nicholas and Bertha (Hein) Griesbach. Leo attended the Appleton Public Schools and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1949 from Lawrence College of Appleton. Prior to his higher education, he proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant-Pharmacy Technician. Leo was a member of American Military Mission to Moscow from 1943 to 1945. He received five medals, including the Bronze Star #9. After the war, Leo was a Licensed Real Estate Broker and Building Contractor. With his beloved brothers, Roy, Cy, Maury and Roman, and with the support of his sisters, Dorothy and Gladys, Leo developed the Gillett Highlands Division in Appleton. This was the land on which their father, Nick, farmed. Together, they built fine homes for over thirty-five years. Leo was a devout Catholic and member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. On May 17, 1952, he married Jane Holmes; she was his soul mate for 56 years.
He is survived by Jane, his wife; his son Mark (Kate Konrad) Griesbach, Tallahassee, Florida; his daughter, Anne Bocik, and his grandson Nicholas Bocik, Appleton. Leo was the most loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather and mentor.
He had a voracious appetite for reading and lived life to the fullest. Leo was an ultimate gentleman and touched all who knew him. He will always be missed and will hold a special place in our hearts. May the Lord keep him and give him peace.
