Persons, Virgil A. "Perk" Perk Persons, age 88, Appleton, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2009, at his home in Appleton. Perk was born August 10, 1920, in Eau Galle, Wisconsin, son of the late Archie and Esther (Reckin) Persons. As a child, he attended elementary school in Eau Galle and Menomonie, Wisconsin, and attended high school in Menomonie, Whitehall, and Spring Valley, Wisconsin. Following his senior year of high school, Perk spent the summer in International Falls, Minnesota, working as a cook in area lumber camps. The next few years he spent driving truck for various employers. In August of 1940, he entered the United States Army and served until 1945, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. While on furlough in 1941, Perk met Mildred Leisering, and the couple dated through the war, and were married on February 2, 1947, in Valparaiso, Indiana. In the late 1940's, he worked at the Institute of Paper Chemistry, and with his mother, his sister, and step-father, Ronald Weber at Black Eagle Station. Perk was a gifted small engine mechanic and eventually he and his father-in-law moved to a new location on Badger Avenue and also became known as Weber and Persons. Eventually, the company would become known as Sport-O-Motive. Perk worked there until 1984, with a brief stint working at Mercury Marine (Kiekhaefer) for a few months in 1965. In his retirement years, Perk enjoyed his involvement at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church where he was a longtime and faithful member. Over the years there he sang in the choir and also worked as the custodian. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, and golfing in two different leagues. Those who knew him well, knew about his famous hole in one! Millie passed away in 1994, and during their time together, they were blessed with eight children: Steven (Jean) Persons of St. Peter, Minnesota; Terry Persons of Cashton, Wisconsin; Kenneth Persons of Green Bay; Linda Persons of Menasha; Shirley (Steve) Lemke of Brillion; Carol (Scott) Sauder of Franksville, Wisconsin; Susan Persons of Milwaukee; and Sandra Schapekahm of Appleton. There are sixteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren; a niece: Dawn (Wayne) Kelm. Perk is also survived by Millie's family, which includes three sisters-in-law: Verna Buesing of Appleton, Norma (Fred) Martinson of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Betty (Brooks) Dodd of Appleton. In September of 1997, Perk married Nathalie Trauba-Arens, who survives him, along with her four children: Tom (Joy) Arens of Lake Poygan; Kathy (Dale) Uecker of Appleton; Mary Jo (Tom) Hansel of Greenville; and Annette Arens of Appleton and her special friend Dennis Carpenter. Nathalie also has three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father Ronald Weber, his wife Millie in 1994, his brothers and sisters-in-law: Bud Buesing, Mary (Bob) Steudel, Elda (Clarence) Ehlke, Eleanor (Donald) Gerald, Carl (Anne) Leisering, Lother Leisering, Robert Leisering, Edward Leisering, and by Nathalie's son Tim Arens who was killed in Vietnam. The Christian Funeral for Perk Persons will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2009, at ST. PAUL EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 302 North Morrison Street in Appleton with Rev. Kenneth Frey officiating.
