1	1827	1827: Appleton History At a site on Little Lake Butte des Morts, Michigan Territorial Governor Lewis Cass negotiated a treaty with the Indian leaders that gave the United States government control over almost all of the Fox River Valley.
2	1828	1828: Kaukauna History In spring, Rev. Jesse Miner arrives to minister to the Stockbridge and Munsee tribes living in Statesburg on the south side of the river.
3	1829	1829: USA History Seventh President of the US is Andrew Jackson 1829-1837
4	1830	1830: Kaukauna History Augustin and Nancy Grignon leave Kaukauna for their holdings in Buttes des Morts. Their sons, Charles and Alexander take over the business and family homestead.
5	1832	1832: Kaukauna History The Black Hawk War. 14 Jul 1832: Wisconsin History July 14, 1832: Congress appropriated $5,000 for surveying the route of what became the Military Road, connecting forts Crawford, Winnebago and Howard. James Doty and Alexander Center surveyed the road in 1832. It was built, in part, by troops under the command of Zachary Taylor. The 234-mile road cost $12,000.

7	1835	1835: Appleton History Hippolyte Paul Grignon built his home and trading post 1835: Appleton History Walter L. Newberry and Joshua Hathaway, Jr., land speculators from Chicago and Milwaukee, became the first to buy land that would one day be a part of Appleton. 1835: Kaukauna History Dam dug at DePere -- one of the first construction projects which was part of the Fox River Locks system 1835: Kaukauna History Paul Beaulieu settles on the south side of Kaukauna (on the hill east of Konkapot Creek). He and James Boyd, a son-in-law to George Lawe, buy and operate Whitney\'s sawmill.

Territorial Governor Henry Dodge, representing the U.S. government, purchased about four million acres of NE Wisconsin from the native Indians. 1836: Kaukauna History Paul Ducharme sells the remainder of his Kaukauna holdings to Judge John Lawe to cove his debts to Lawe. Lawe in turn gives the holdings to his son, George.

14	1844	1844: Appleton History Eleazar Williams made a loan agreement with Amos A. Lawrence, using his wife\'s land on the Fox River for collateral. Williams later defaulted on the loan, and Mr. Lawrence took possession of the property. 1844: Kaukauna History Immigrant Peter Deidrich, born in Holland, settles and operates a ferry service directly across from Michael Klein farm.
15	1845	1845: Appleton History 1845 Paul Grignon bought the land on which he had lived for the past ten years, becoming the first to purchase land north of the Fox River that would one day be a part of Appleton. 1845: Appleton History 1845 The Reverend Reeder Smith met with Amos A. Lawrence as a site for the Lawrence Institute. 1847: Appleton History 1847 The Wisconsin Territorial Legislature granted a charter to the Lawrence Institute on January 17. 1847: USA History Treaty of Cahuenga ends Mexican-American War
18	1848	1848: Appleton History 1848 On August 4, Rev. Reeder Smith, Rev. William H. Sampson, Joel S. Wright, a surveyor, and Henry Blood, a Methodist volunteer, moved onto the Lawrence Institute land and began laying out the plots for the school and for a village. 1848: Appleton History 1848 The name Appleton\ was first used for the tiny village that was growing around the Lawrence Institute. The village was named to honor Sarah Appleton 1848: Appleton History 1848 Wisconsin entered the union as the 30th state on May 29. 1848: Appleton History 1848 Wisconsin Methodist Church leaders raised the $10,000 necessary to match Amos A. Lawrence\'s gift of $10,000 to endow the Lawrence Institute.

Martin's crew of 500 workers began excavations at Kaukauna for the locks and dams system. 1851: Kaukauna History March 1851 the Wisconsin state legislature changed the name of the town from Grand Kaukalin to Kaukauna. 1851: Kaukauna History Alexander Grignon plats the town of Springville located on the eastern end of the Grignon land, near a sulphur spring. The town could not compete with Kaukauna and failed.
