1	1851	1851: Appleton History 1851 In April, the first county elections were held. 1851: Appleton History 1851 On February 17, Outagamie County was created by the State Legislature, with Grand Chute as the county seat. 1851: Appleton History 1851 The first meeting of the Outagamie County Board was held in Appleton on April 18. 1851: Wisconsin History June 1851 Morgan L. Martin's crew of 500 workers began excavations at Kaukauna for the locks and dams system. 1851: Kaukauna History March 1851 the Wisconsin state legislature changed the name of the town from Grand Kaukalin to Kaukauna. 1851: Kaukauna History Alexander Grignon plats the town of Springville located on the eastern end of the Grignon land, near a sulphur spring. The town could not compete with Kaukauna and failed.

A boat from the Mississippi River met a boat from the Great Lakes for the first time at Appleton. 1854: Appleton History 1854 The village of Appleton was divided into two fire districts, east and west of Appleton Street, and a fire warden was appointed for each district.
5	1856	1856: Kaukauna History Completion of the Fox Locks and dam system. The economic boom for Kaukauna ends as canal workers move on. Vacant buildings are purchased and moved.
