    Dominque Ducharme becomes the first person of European descent to live in the Appleton area when he built a home and trading post where the city of Kaukauna is today.

    First recorded sale of land in Wisconsin occurs when Dominique DuCharme buys 1,282 acres of land that is today\'s Kaukauna from Wapisipine and Le Black Tobacco for two barrels of rum.

    At this time, Kakalin was a village of over 1,500 inhabitants, mostly Indians and French-Indian traders. One resident is Dan McCrea, a Scotsman married to a Menominee woman, and whose daughter, Nancy would become Augustine\'s wife.

    October 26, 1818: Wisconsin was divided into three counties when it was part of the Michigan Territory. The northern county was named Michilimackinac County, the eastern county was named Brown County and the western county was named Crawford County.

    Eleazar Williams led a group of New York Indians to their new reservation west of Green Bay.

    At a site on Little Lake Butte des Morts, Michigan Territorial Governor Lewis Cass negotiated a treaty with the Indian leaders that gave the United States government control over almost all of the Fox River Valley.

    In spring, Rev. Jesse Miner arrives to minister to the Stockbridge and Munsee tribes living in Statesburg on the south side of the river.

  • 14 Jul 1832: Wisconsin History
    July 14, 1832: Congress appropriated $5,000 for surveying the route of what became the Military Road, connecting forts Crawford, Winnebago and Howard. James Doty and Alexander Center surveyed the road in 1832. It was built, in part, by troops under the command of Zachary Taylor. The 234-mile road cost $12,000.

    The United States government made the first survey of the Fox River Valley, beginning with the area south of the river.
