Wright, a surveyor, and Henry Blood, a Methodist volunteer, moved onto the Lawrence Institute land and began laying out the plots for the school and for a village. 1848: Appleton History 1848 The name Appleton\ was first used for the tiny village that was growing around the Lawrence Institute. The village was named to honor Sarah Appleton 1848: Appleton History 1848 Wisconsin entered the union as the 30th state on May 29. 1848: Appleton History 1848 Wisconsin Methodist Church leaders raised the $10,000 necessary to match Amos A.
